  1. Pre-Medical
After a few months of waivering between nursing and medicine, I made my final decision. My love is medicine. I've wanted it since high school, but have been unable or unwilling to figure out what needs to be done in order to get to medical school. Life has had its ups and downs, and I've had many disadvantages when it comes to schooling... no support from my mom, don't even know my biological father, ex step-dad is already sending one kid to college and has two other little ones to worry about, had to support myself... its been a difficult 8 years since I graduated high school.

But circumstances have changed! I am in a situation where I can actually pursue school! And I've never been more excited 🙂 Now the precess of getting to medical school will be a challenging one.

Just for kicks, I looked up practice MCAT questions. Did great on the writing and verbal sections, but some of the science questions... really? I think they were chemistry (I've never taken a chem class in my life!), but it was equations with letters and it made no sense. I had to calmly tell myself that even though the equations and letters I saw made no sense to me, one day they will.

I'm very excited to get this process started. I love science, and I do well in classes I actually try in. I'm glad I found this site, and this Nontraditional forum... its good to have support!

We can do this!

Welcome to SDN!

For your MCAT, check out the MCAT Forum

The general consensus on what practice books to get are the following:

For Physics get The Berkeley Review (TBR) or Nova (pick Nova if you have a weak background in physics)
For Chem/Ochem it's TBR
For Bio it's ExamKrackers (TBR might be good too)
For Verbal it's ExamKrackers

You should have these books as you are going through your prerequisites.

welcome to SDN - this site is a great resource, especially for nontrads who (like myself) may not have access to a full-fledged pre-med advisor.

while i'm sure you'll find it quite useful, remember to take everything you read here with a grain of NaCl. While some knowledgable people do post here, just remember it's still teh intern3tz

more often than not, they look scarier than they are. once you learn the basic principles, it becomes much easier than you think.

Congrats on taking the first steps along this path. 🙂 Keep your grades high, get involved in the community and in a clinical setting and come back here lots for support and advice.
