I just finished my third year of undergrad. I have been wanting to go into pharmacy, and I have worked in a pharmacy for the past 3 years. But I do not feel that I'm invloved enough with the patient's care. So I decided to make a change of major; I wanna goto med school. When I was a freshmen I kinda wanted to go for medicine but I was discouraged by my boss because he wants me to go into pharmacy so I can be his partner at our store. So its a big relief to finaly say NO to that idea and do what I really want to do .

Well enough with my story on my switch, now comes the real question. I have worked in a retail pharmacy for 3 years now, and I don't think that will help me get into med school. So I started looking for a job at a hospital so I can get some clinical experience, the bad thing is nobody is highering in my area!!! So I decided to volunteer at a hospital 🙂 , but that doesnt start until june 🙁 . Im real eager to get started into some kind of clinical thing. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how and what they did for their clinical experiences and how they got involved into that position. Any input would be good.

Hey there...

I was a pharmacy tech for 3 years as well...working in a large 24 hour- retail pharmacy here around chicago. That is good experience and will definitely be an asset to your application...don't discount it just cuz it's not clinical experience. Anyways, you can even ask your own family physician to shadow him/her for a while(that's what I did..and my physician was a DO..which really got me interested in osteopathy). Anyways, you can always go to different area hospitals and look for volunteering experience(volunteers are needed all the time when employment isn't going)...ask friends or relatives of yours if they have nice doctors..and call them up and ask if they'd be willing to have you volunteer for them or shadow them...any experience is good experience. Don't worry...I didn't have too much clinical experience..in fact I even worked at Structure(retail guy's clothing)..and talked about that during my interviews at the various med schools...that was interesting!

Isn't June just a few days away? It took me over a month to get my hospice orientation set up. Chill! Go to a movie, read a book, relax. The time will fly. Good for you for finding something so quickly.

Anyway, hospice is another way to get involved, especially if your area has a hospice residence facility as well as hospice home care. You spend time with patients, bring them meals, visit, sometimes help the nursing staff with body care if needed. Oh, and since our hospice doesn't use a laundry service, folding laundry is a big plus. If you do that, the nursing staff will love you till you die. In my area, the service is run by the Visiting Nurses Association.

hey there,
i'm glad u are finally doing what you really want to do. you remind me of a friend of mine. he spent 2 yrs of his undergrad doing what he felt his father(and some other people) wanted him to do, but he finally(as a junior) switched in to a mjor he was really interested in.

A lot of hospitals train their nursing assistants. so instead of volunteering, you could actually make some money and you will get more hands on. I worked as a nursing assistant for almost two years during undergrad and it was a great experience.
