main idea?

I was looking at the EK method and well perhaps I'm expecting a jump too soon but I think that maybe my main idea is off. Any tips on how to get the main idea out of the passage? I have a feeling that my main idea might just be details.

When you finish reading a paragraph quickly summarize it in your head. As you are summarizing paragraphs look for a common thread that holds them together, most times, if you have summarized correctly, this will be the "main idea". Make sure to read every word, but don't get bogged down in the details.

I don't know if you've gone through the whole method yet, but I thought that their most useful advice was to read like you are listening to someone telling you a story. Ask yourself, why in the world is this person saying this? Does that help??
