Hey guys
Does anyone know if & how I can maintain my California state residency status for application to medical school if I choose to work out of state (namely Chicago, IL) for my gap year?
I have a CA drivers license, am registered to vote in CA, and have lived in CA for the past 11 years.
I read something somewhere that if my parents continue to claim me as a dependent & remain residency in CA, I can still be considered a CA resident by the time I start medical school, but if I take a full-time job in Chicago for a year, they can't claim me as a dependent anymore, right?

Thanks!

I maintained mine throughout college OOS because my parents were claiming me. Your parents will probably still claim you because they were able to support you in your last year of college. Just don't register to vote in another state and you should be okay.

you're parents can still claim you as a dependent on their taxes until you are 24 i believe (even if you have a full-time job)

yeah, but...it depends: the parents would have to provide at least 50 percent of the dependent's financial support, plus the dependent must note that they are someone else's tax dependent, and the parents will get a slight break on taxes, but the dependent will pay a higher amount of taxes on their income...seems like a lot of trouble to go through to hold on to CA residency - most people would LOVE to be a resident of another state for app purposes.

Most states need you to stay in the state for a full year to gain residency, so don't stay in IL for a full year. Stay for only 11 months or so.

This is just speculation though. I would call one of the UC med schools and ask them specifically. Call two just to be sure.

Unless you somehow think you are overqualified for CA schools I'd ditch the CA residency and learn to love IL.

Sorry, this is not true. Once you've moved to a new state and are working and no longer a full time student, you automatically become a resident of that state. Most states require you be a resident for one year before you qualify for in-state admission/tuition status, however. Thus can put you in the nasty situation where you don't qualify for in-state tuition anywhere!

That being said, there is some wiggle room. The determination of whether you qualify as in-state is made by the admissions/financial aid office and they are known to be flexible from the legal rule sometimes if you have a strong connection to the state.
