Hey

I am an International Student, and my plans just changed (dramatically).

Is there a preferred major for Dental?

And if the answer is no, than does this means I can really opt for WHATEVER major I want (even one that is almost unfamiliar - like religious studies) ?

thanks 😳

Yep, religious studies is fine as long as you have taken all the science prerequisites. Although some schools require some upper level bio courses such as biochemistry and microbiology; you just have to check the individual school website.

The common consensus here is that you can major in whatever interests you, just make sure you fulfill all the dental school requirements. However, I would be slightly wary of that advice since you also don't want to come across as having taken the easy way out.

No, there is no preferred major, yes you can opt for whatever major you want. If you're serious about a religious studies major, make sure you apply to Loma Linda, Marquette, Detroit Mercy, and Creighton 😉

I don't think your major matters that much, but what I do know is that the DAT is less focused on Jesus & Mohammad, and more focused on sciences. So, you'll probably benefit more if you're a science major.

Regardless of what major you choose, you still need to do all your science pre-reqs, and take some of the upper-level bios that d-schools recommend. You don't need to be a science major; most of the upper level courses you'd take as a science major are beyond the scope of the DAT anyways, you only need pre-reqs (and a couple other courses, like physiology & biochemistry) to do well on the DAT.

Like I said, I don't think major matters!!
But, since your pursuing a field that's closely related to science, why not start with becoming a science major. Sure, people have different passions. But at the same time I think people need to be focused as well. I understand if someone want's to major in business and then pursue dentistry. As a matter of fact that's a smart idea, because running a private practice is essentially running a small business. But I don't understand how you can incorporate religion into dentistry!

Well, if your passion is Bio or Chem, then perfect, be a Bio or Chem major! Otherwise, since major doesn't matter, pick a major that you will enjoy and that you will do well in, why not enjoy your 4 years in college a little more by picking a major you are passionate about? If you have a specific area of study that you are passionate about, pick that as a major. But if you are indifferent or unsure of what major to pick, you might as well be a Bio major.

:laugh: Yea dude! I've been thinking about that for a long long time. Too bad I hate that school, so I'm not interested in any sort of explanation they might offer me! It just sounds ridiculous and unfair, when one of their most important criteria for admission is to be a Christian. How is this any different from affirmative action? What's next? A special dental school for overweight people?! You can't get in unless you're 250+ lbs.
