  1. Pre-Pharmacy
I am a freshman undergrad student at CC and I am planning on taking pre pharmacy courses. I am very confused about what to major in...as well as a few other topics...

Some people have told me to major in Sociology and Psychology and others have told me to be an Anthropology major. Does anyone have any recommendations on which is better??😕

I plan on transferring to UCLA in fall 2010 and I am unsure about what major will increase my chances of acceptance and will also look good for pre pharmacy.

If anyone has any advice please let me know because it is important to complete my major courses as soon as possible. I am still unsure, as I have been for a while about what to major in. If I were to double major what could I double major in??

Also, I hope on getting into USC pharmacy school..does anyone know what the chances of getting in with a 3.7 or 3.6 gpa are? and how much does my score on the PCAT effect my acceptance?

In addition, since I am attending Santa Monica Community College now...where is it recommended that I take most of my upper level chem classes and other pre pharmacy requisites? should i take them at the CC level (since the classes might be considerably easier) or once I transfer to UCLA?

Thanks!😀

I've talked about this. Whatever gives you the higher GPA, which you should explore as a CC student. This is usually in accordance to interest, but not necessarily.

At that point, it doesn't matter. Pre-pharmacy is, for the most part, over at the point of transfer. Don't base your major based on this. Majors are different sizes at UCLA. Tailor yourself to your interests or talents. Look at the UCLA catalog online and check out majors you are interested in.

This is difficult to do at UCLA for one reason: Unit Caps. You are limited as to the number of units are you can take at UCLA before you must leave UCLA. Degree or not. One student was short 3 units (less than 1 class at UCLA) for a second degree. He left with 1 degree and no minor. Very disappointing.

1. Pretty good. 2. Will not affect at all UNLESS you did poorly.

People will tell you different things here. I would say make sure you take: CHEM 153A (biochem), CHEM 153L (biochem lab), MIMG 101 (microbio), MIMG 101L (microbio lab), PHYSCI (the summer anat/physio class), and MCDB 100 (cell bio) at UCLA. All other requisites feel free to take at SMC. USC requires 4-year college courses for these prerequisites.

Work on obtaining a research position and getting used to professional academia. I can't stress this enough.

very helpful!!...what about upper division chem courses, such as organic chemistry..do you recommend i take those at the community college level or at UCLA?

...i dont know if you know anything about CC but if you or anyone else does..would u recommend science classes(chem 10, 11, 12...) at LA trade tech college instead of SMC since i have heard it is considerably easier there?

also you mentioned to get involved with research...how could i go about that? are u aware of any programs i can join or how and where i can do research?....since i understand this looks good or maybe is even required for pharmacy schools

Take your lower division wherever you want to. The only issue is whether or not it will prepare you for the upper division work at UCLA. For me, I had to take classes wherever they were offered and I chose to take all my sciences (lower and upper) at a 4-year university (UCLA and CSUs), so I didn't get the luxury of picking and choosing whichever was easier. I would say take them at SMC since it has a history of successful transfers. Remember, transfers are not automatic. You apply.

Look up some professors at UCLA or UCLA med and just e-mail them your interest/resume. Offer them your free time (a lot) and tell them your willing to keep up with the research for 2+ years. Some professors require that you do some kind of coursework in science. Remember, you are competing against UCLA students.
