Who's with me?

I'm on my last elective rotation (vacation scheduled for next month). It's not in the field I've applied to and the workload isn't too bad. There's several 3rd year students on the rotation looking to shine and I'm more than happy to take a back seat and let them have the spotlight. The residents know where my head is at and have pretty much given me the green light to do whatever I want. I know nothing I do or learn now is going to make me any more competent or less overwhelmed come July 1.

Don't get me wrong, I still do everything that is necessary for quality patient care of the minimal patient load I take on, but I swear it takes every last ounce of energy I have to actually roll out of bed in the morning, make a cup of coffee and go in to the hospital. I'm sure I'll get chastised for this from some of the power 4th years out there, but sound off if you've rented a hotel in slackerville for the next month or two!

Ya I've been going rapidly downhill lately. I'm in the SICU and rounds are done by like 9am and I'm down with all my work by like 10am. I really have to restrain myself from just leaving everyday. I just try to scrape by with the bare minimum. I'm really checked out, especially with the match just around the corner.

I checked out as soon as my interviews were done. After that I had an ID consult rotation where we had to come in around 930-10am and had weekends off. So that definitely did not help the motivation. Our work consisted of consulting for the ID service, which was pretty busy but at most the students would each get one patient a day to work up between ~10-1 and then we'd round from 1 onward.

I have an independent project for the rest of school where I make my own hours which basically consists of me doing some work and spending the rest of the time on SDN or online.

yes, yes, a thousand times, yes. i am on my next to last month and i can barely muster the energy to THINK about going to the hospital anymore, especially for these required blocks that i have NO interest in.

but, yeah, like you i go and do the best i can for the minimum time i can ;-)

What are the expectations for you 4th years at this point? Do the attendings/residents pretty much know that you've checked out and thus dont really expect you to do much?

I feel like I've seen this at my school some.. 4th years hang out while 3rd years on the same service take on more responsibilities.

end of my third year... and 'itis' is already kicking in!! good thing I'm ending the year with chill rotations 😎

I'll have to get my game back on before my sub-I this July 😱

Not a whole lot. Partially depends on the rotation and mindset.. I'm on a path rotation and am there for no more than 2 hours a day. But people who did certain sub-Is last month got slammed. If I was on an elective and forced to work at this point when it has no bearing or use for my future I'd be annoyed.

It actually works out well this way. The 4th years are mentally checking out and the 3rd years have been on the wards long enough to start getting comfortable with their presentations, the computer system, writing notes, and the like that they can begin to take on more responsibilities and have a smoother transition in to their Sub Is. Everybody wins. Especially me.👍
