I'm a junior in highschool and was looking at an undergraduate book for the university of texas... under pre-medicine it said you can major in anything and still go to med school... so what do most people that are pre-meds major in? can basically anybody in a university be "pre-med" or do u have to have something saying you are? any help would be greatly appreciated... thanx

As long as you take more science classes than the bare minnimum most schools don't seem to care. I majored in German and most schools I have interviewed at have been impressed that I could do so well in a range of classes. Just do well in whatever major you choose and it doesn't matter.

Exercise Science is an excellent premed degree for "real world" medicine preparation. also called Kinesiology. i don't know if you're into that....but check it out at a university near you! 👍

Major in something you have an interest in, but make sure you take all of the science classes required, as well as a few extra that may help you with the MCAT (Genetics, Micro, Biochem).

I majored in Criminal Justice

My major is liberal studies (Social Sciences) you get to pick your areas of concentration so mine was biological sciences to fulfill my prereqs for med school. Anybody can be called "premed" with whatever major.

Major at what you can excel at..because GPA will be important...Im at UT-austin rite now..if you have any Questions..PM me

Personally, I think that if you are interested in going into medicine it's kind of important to choose a major (not necessarily science or medically related) that will let you work when you get out of school, just in case something happens and you can't go directly to med school and don't have the desire or means to get an advanced degree. I mean lots of pre-med kids at my university choose to be Human Bio majors. It's a great major, but doesn't exactly qualify you to do anything specific (except graduate and go on to med school) without an advanced degree. I graduated with a med-tech major and it allows me to work right now (I graduated last spring) in a pretty good job before I go to med-school next fall.
As a freshman just try different classes that sound interesting and find something you will enjoy studying and get some of the pre-med pre-recs out of the way. Sort of test the waters to see if it's something you will enjoy--GOOD LUCK!!! 👍

I agree with my colligues on this one. While most pre-med major in biology and a few in chemistry, all that really matters is that you compleate the minimum required courses. However, you should pick an undergrad major you enjoy and could live with if you had to do it as a plan B. On a side note, learn to memorize real good, real fast. Hope this helps.

do any major that will enable you to have a high gpa and plenty of time for volunteer research and ec's. i chose to do engineering...bad idea if you are set on medicine.

Like everyone else has said you do not have to major in Bio or Chem to get into medical school. What is important is that you pursue your interests because it will keep you sane while you take all of the med school required courses. Plus schools actually look at other majors as a plus because it shows you have other interest and are well rounded. Having an education to fall back on if you do not get into school the first time is something to consider. I majored in exercise science and believe that it was one of the best choices I made. I did not get in to school the first time around and have been working as a physical therapy aide. Do what is best for you.

I chose psychology because I was a second-semester sophomore and was forced to pick something. In retrospect, I would not have picked it because I don't intend to go on to grad school for psych. Otherwise, it wasn't really that bad.

I, personally, would have done music, philosophy, or physics. Unfortunately it's a bit too late to go back. Don't take classes you're not interested in -- your transcript will show it. Trust me, mine does.

If only there was a way to start over

if could do it over again, i'd major in english or literature... docs need literary/narrative competence...

I think these along with philosophy and history are great for future docs. You really get those thinking skills sharpened.

You can major in just about anything as long as you nail all the sci classes on the side. I was a history major (concentration in Asian/Middle Eastern cross cultural studies) with a minor in economics. Would I recommend that to others? Not really. You'll spend the first few months doing twice as much work as all the other med students who have a stronger basic sci background if you just hit the bare minimum classes in undergrad.

1. Major in whatever you would do if you weren't in medical school

2. Major in something that has some science classes, so you aren't spending extra time in school.

3. Pick a major in which you will recieve a high GPA

4. Pick a major that you will enjoy

(I majored in Forensic Science)

i think that deciding to go into medicine gives you a huge advantage in choosing your undergraduate major. You have the choice to study what ever in the hell you want or think will be important to you. The prereqs. are not hard to do on top of another major. I say, if your going to be study science and medicine for a lifetime, take the time to study something that you will never get a chance to study again, i guarantee you it will inevitably make you a better person and hence a better doctor
. my vote philosophy, yeah baby
good luck
