Trying to really avoid majoring in Biology. Im in my spring sophmore semester and have only taken classes which apply to my Pre Dent pre req's so Im still in good shape to switch majors.

Personally I really want to major in a business related field not only for the knowledge for when I run my own practice, but it also serves as a stable backup.

The 2 undergrad degree's I'm considering are bachelors in Finance or Accounting.

my question is, which of these two would benefit me more towards Dentistry, from the time they review my app to dent school to the time I open up my own practice, and if there's another business related major I should look into.

thanks ahead of time!

Accounting. It may not help with dentistry that much, but it is a great back-up. Accounting is a great degree to get these days. The accounting department at the University of Wyoming has like a 99% job placement rate. Also the median income for accountants is pretty high.

So basically if you are looking for a back-up, I'd go with accounting.

Also, compared to high level science classes, accounting is super easy.

Do whatever interests you!! I was in the same situation and decided to pick up both degrees, economics and biology.

Yea ease of major is also a big factor considering Im probably going to put minimal effort into it compared to my science courses pertaining to dentistry.

anyone completed a business major with a pre dent course load?

Business classes, in general, are less difficult than science classes and if you have done well in the science classes you shouldn't have a problem with business courses. The accounting classes I had were more difficult on average than my finance classes, so take that for what its worth. Also consider marketing or leadership if your school has them...those are very easy classes to get A's in and are also more interesting in my opinion.

As for choosing the major as a backup option, you should pick the one that interests you most as it could end up being your career.

One last thought, even if you major in accounting (which is A LOT of credits to get a CPA) you probably won't do your own accounting at your dental practice. You will be 4-6 years removed from any meaningful coursework in accounting and will want to focus on more important things as a dentist.

between finance and accounting, I would also suggest accounting. Just seems to be a little more applicable (but not by much) 🙂

Accounting. I was a business major and then stayed to complete pre reqs after graduation. I didn't think it was smart to mix the two, but it is up to you. The electives I took were somewhat easy, and I cant imagine what my semesters would have been like if I took ochem as an elective instead of intro to music online. Took me 5.5 years. Applied to 15 schools, three acceptances and 12 interview invites (didnt attend all). Talked about business in all my interviews and would say overall schools saw it as a positive.

Definitely dont want to stay for 5.5 years just for undergrad but accounting does seem like a good option. And would you say not to mix the accounting and dent coursework due to the amount of credits needed for each or something else?
