I'm a community college student and I'm behind on my science prerequisites (won't be able to start on them until I'm a sophomore).

I was previously interested focusing in International Relations or Political Science, but now I'm just not sure.

If I major in bio, it would be easier, since I need to take those science prerequisites anyway, and I also want to take some upper level science courses when I do transfer to a university (to show them that I can handle the work).

If I were a non-science major all this would be significantly more difficult, so I'm trying to figure out if the benefit of academically studying a field more interesting is worth all the extra trouble.

*So confused* 😕

EDIT: I'm not worried about CC. The worry is the major.

I dont think you should take you pre-req at a CC, most schools dont like it or wont accept it. I recently spoke to my Dean and she said you can major in whatever you want to as long as you take your pre-req & do great on the DAT. She said you want to have a great gpa, do good on the DAT, and make yourself look different from other applicants. Good Luck! 🙂

If I don't take any pre-reqs in my first two years, I'll be extremely behind and unless I want to spend an extra year at undergrad, a non-science major then might not be pragmatic.

I took 80% of my pre-reqs at a community college and schools don't mind it seems like (5 interviews already).

To the op:

Mainatain great GPA (cc and 4-year), do good on the DAT and you will be in a good shape.

In all likelihood, in your case, the number of pre reqs you took at cc had little bearing on (the number) of interviews you had.

That might be the case... But still then it means schools worry more about grades, scores, dental experience, ECs than where you took the pre-reqs.

I think OP should concentrate more on getting good grades, scores and dental-related experiences than worrying about where to take pre-reqs.

Also, to answer the thread question, it doesn't matter which major you choose, however, schools are interested in seeing candidates with broad experiences/education. It might actually benefit you if you are a political science major. It is harder.. yes, because you have to take extra classes to satisfy pre-reqs for dental school but in the end it might turn out real good for you.
If you feel like you are able to handle such a schedule - go for it. You could try taking pol sci classes and pre-req science classes all in one quarter/semester and see how it goes. If it goes bad - choose sci major only🙂

I spent all 4 years at a university so I cant speak about CC, but I def would wait and take the pre recs when you get to the University, just to be safe

As for your major, you could major in whatever you want, but it will be hard to fit in upper division classes I would think.

Idk thats a personal decision.

Make sure get good grades whatever you decide to do. If you decide to be a non science major, you should def get solid A's in the pre recs to show you can handle the science classes since you wont have that many.
