Makenzeey,

Yes, most applicants AND accepted people are Biological and Chemistry/Physical Science majors!

Here are some statistic numbers from the book UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN DENTAL SCHOOLS ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS published by American Dental Education Association (ADEA):

1998 statistics

Total Applicants (TA): 9447
Total Accepted Applicants (TAA): 4178

Biological Science Major: (TA)=5168, (TAA)=2329
Chem/Phy. Science Major: (TA)=1306, (TAA)=587

Total percentage of Biological and Chem/Phy. Science majors applied and got accepted to dental schools in 1998 application cycle:

TA = 6474/9447 (100%) = 68.5%
TAA = 2916/4178 (100%) = 69.8%

According to these numbers, almost 70% of applicants applied to dental schools in 1998 were either Biological Science or Chemistry/Physical Science Majors!

😎

I was wondering because I'm a history major.

A History major is fine! As long as you've taken all the science course requirements for your specific dental schools, you'll be fine. As matter of fact, a lot of dental schools strongly encouraging applicants with non-traditional majors to apply. Good luck. 😎

Thanks yah-e,
Congrats on your acceptance to Nova.

In fact, by looking at those stats, it would appear that biological or physical science majors have little, if any, advantage over other majors when competing for dental school admission. 68.5% of all applicants were biological or physical science majors and took 69.8% of the available slots.

Hi Yah-E,
You mention there are some schools that
prefer non traditional major. could you tell
me what schools are? Thanks!

yeah, I agree with groundhog...those stats indicate that the same ratio of sci majors that applied is the same for those who got in. Basically, that means that 70% of the applicants were sci majors, and 70% of the accepted were sci majors, so it seems there is no advantage given whatsoever.

Grettlin,

Dental schools DO NOT have a major preference for their applicants. As long as you've taken and satisfied the admissions course requirements for specific dental schools of your choice, you are ENCOURAGED to apply!

I believe that since the majority of applicants are Science majors (biological, chemical, and physical science majors) applying to dental schools, applicants with a non-science major will look heavily upon (they will stand out). Afterall, dental schools are very much like medical schools in the sense that they want their classes to be diverse, including their academic background.

Remember, as long as you've completed the admissions course requirements, dental schools will not care if you majored in "Under-Water Folk Dancing"!!!

I personally know that Univ. of Minnesota, Nova, and Temple do encourage non-science major (French, History, Economics, Anthropology, Engineering, etc.) to apply, but I'm sure MANY other dental schools are doing the same if not all the schools.
