I didnt want to make a thread like this, but i really can't decide and i dont know any other pre-vet people!
so it is between the mba/dvm program at CSU or NCSU. if NCSU, then i won't do the mba program. tuition is pretty similar, but my whole family is near NCSU... try something new or stay close wt the fam??
what do yall think?

Hi,

have you made a long list of pros and cons for each school? sounds silly, but really helps me when i am undecided about something. if i were lucky enough to be in your shoes, i would probably pick NCSU. great school. great area to live. relatively inexpensive cost of living. the thought of having my family near me for some mental support would be a plus. also, not sure if trying something new added to the stress of vet school would work best for me. i am applying next year and hope to get into ncstate.

good luck to you!! and congrats! 🙂

I also got into NCSU... They've been sending me stuff in email about changing state residency after the first year so the difference in cost may be a huge factor if you're not a CO resident already. I know for me, this is a huge factor Im considering when comparing NCSU to my instate school, Penn as Penn's instate tuition (not to mention cost of living) is very high.

Are you going to NCSU's open house in two weeks? I'm planning on attending and I hope to get a good feel of the school and whether or not it would be a good fit for me then... I was also waitlisted at CSU and expect to get off the waitlist at some point (Im #8) so Im also going to try to visit there so I can get a feel for CSU as well. Tough call. I think, personally, if money was not an issue I would choose CSU over NCSU because of their large animal/equine programs however its a tough call with two really nice schools!

Well it makes it tricky because the MBA/DVM program at colorado gives you in state tuition, so money wise they arent that different-maybe $3,000 more per year. its mainly the distance... i do like how student-friendly colorado was and their large class size can be good and bad.
i am going to their 'meet the students' thing on the 31st and the open house on th 1st. if anyone wants to meet i'm willing, if that isn't weird!

First of all, congratulations on both as they are excellent schools. I had to post because Colorado State has always been my dream school so given the chance I would go there. Unfortunately I am an alternate there now and I will probably let it go rather than playing the waiting simply because I have other good choices. Also, I am the number seven alternate at NCSU.
Colorado was my number one pick due to the very strong equine program, exceptional teaching hospital, and the location. Colorado is a beautiful state with tons of opportunities for outdoor oriented people.
The downsides of Colorado in my book are the large class size and the expense of tuition (although it sounds like the later is not much of factor in your case).
NCSU also has an excellent reputation as I understand and I have heard that Raleigh is a lovely place although I have never been there. I believe the NCSU has some great programs geared toward aqua vet/exotic vet med if you are interested in these areas.
Lastly, it is always nice to be near family, however if you are planning to return to home when you graduate from veterinary school (as I am) than it may be fun to live somewhere completely different while you have the chance.
Good luck! You can't go wrong either way so feel good about whatever decision you make.

thanks for the advice guys🙂 those are all good points! right now i am leaning towards NCSU but we'll see after the open house day!

Hi...

In regard to NCSU, Pathbrd, how difficult is it to gain residency? I've been considering NCSU for awhile now, as I heard the zoo/aquatic program is really good. The cost is what's offsetting me at the moment. 🙂 Thanks.

Here is all stuff that they sent me...

"DVM Residency Status Statistics
Class of 2006: 14 non-residents accepted, 14 obtained residency
Class of 2007: 18 non-residents accepted, 18 obtained residency
Class of 2008: 14 non-residents accepted, 12 obtained residency
Class of 2009: 14 non-residents accepted, not eligible to apply until 06/01/2006"

It sounds like it theoretically is not terrible difficult, especially since so many people have been successful, however I plan to be asking plenty of questions about it when I go to their open house next weekend!

Thanks for the info! 🙂 Let me know if you find out anything to the contrary!
