Ok guys,

You all know how this goes so I'm gonna start with my info, list some schools, and you can tell me how terrible (or not terrible) my list is. I'm shooting to apply to about 15 schools, so this list needs some trimming.

Who I am:
3.65 cGPA, 3.55 BCPM (steep upward trend after 1st semester sophmore year, GPA has not been below 3.7 since then)
MCAT = 36R (14PS/11V/11B)
Michigan Resident

EC's:
Clinical experience shadowing in multiple fields, along with a job as a sort of "intern" last summer that had me working full time and learning to be (and eventually performing as) a tech in an outpatient gastroenterology center.

Co-founder and of a student organization that has received numerous awards for excellence.

1 yr of hospital volunteering (3 hrs/wk; same experience as everyone else, didn't do much outside of stocking things, but had plenty of opportunities to chat with patients which was enjoyable).

1 yr of clinical research (no pubs but research is on-going and pubs are possible in the future, presented poster at student symposium)

3 yrs as a member of the university club rugby team (member of first XV for all 3 yrs, helped lead team to nationals as a sophmore). Volunteered in both Buenos Aires and New Orleans with habitat on spring tours.

Now for the list. A few things to keep in mind: I am applying to all of my instate schools, I'd prefer to be in a larger city, but I love the outdoors and anywhere with opportunites for activities of that nature will be given preferrential treatment. I'm also trying to spread my applications across a few categories (reach, some sort of middle ground, and "safety" [yea I know safeties don't really exist]), so that's how I'm going to list them (if you have any commentary on how any one school is categorized please provide your input). I'm not particularly turned off by the idea of PBL but I'd prefer a traditional curriculum, and other than that I'm not incredibly concerned about curriculum because it's my understanding that schools are generally the same in that department. I would like to continue research in medical school, and I'm not really sure about research funding dollars (I have seen the NIH list) and how they relate to actual opportunities to participate in research, so if anyone could hit on that I would appreciate it.

Well, that was long, and if you're still with me... a thousand thanks. I'm open to any suggestions (trimming the list, additions, caveats, etc.), so please feel free to throw in your two cents. I'm finding this to be by far the hardest part of the application so your input is MUCH appreciated!

REACH
U Mich- I don't think this is necessarily a reach for you.

I think you could add UCLA and UCSF if you want. They take a fair amount of OOS students.

Colorado- I'd get rid of this one, OOS tuition is really, really high.

I would recommend fewer top ten schools and more schools in the 10-40range. I would drop Harvard, JHU, and Stanford, and replace them with Emory, Pitt, and Rochester or U of Chicago You have some great ECs, but your GPA is way below average for the elite schools, despite the upward trend. I agree that as a Michigan resident that UM is not a reach for you.

Honker is pessimistic about everybody's chances at top schools.

GW and Georgetown are not safeties no matter what their matriculant stats look like - these schools get swamped with apps for the highly desirable east coast location...instead you should have some real safeties on your list like SLU or EVMS...

You do know the situation with OOS tuition at Colorado, right? Unless money is no object, punt this one...

If you are going to apply to all of those top 10 - 20s, you should up your list target to around 20 schools...

Thanks for the input guys, please keep it coming.

Ok so I managed to lean the list down to 12 that I'm pretty positive I'd like to apply to. Was in Chicago just this last weekend and realized I had forgotten how awesome that city is. Any suggestions for rounding it out? I want to add 3 more schools, but might be open to adding a few more (possibly after submitting, mid/late June).
