Making Medical School Application Stand Out

Hello guy. So my application is pretty good as far as stats go-3.78 GPA and 34 MCAT, which is not great but decent. I have 3 years research and 5 years clinical experiences. But i really want my application to stand out, and i only have one thing for that:
A few years ago, i started to write articles for my local newspaper. They were comedy. I did it because i love to watch people being happy and laughing. I also made several thousand and donated it to the poor. People send me emails every day saying how happy they are and how much they appreciated making their day. Would this be something truly unique?

If you find a nice way to tie this into the human aspect of your interest in medicine I think it could add to your narrative. I doubt this alone would make you a stand out applicant though.

I think that's an awesome thing to have on your application. It's clever and makes for a good talking point during interview. I think the whole "unique" thing is taken to the extreme on SDN. Yes, everything has been done before but having this doesn't NOT make you unique. It adds edge to your application and can certainly be looked at as a unique trait. Good luck!

It makes you seem like an interesting, likeable person. Add this as an activity to AMCAS, and include this (but reworded) "I did it because i love to watch people being happy and laughing. I also made several thousand and donated it to the poor. People send me emails every day saying how happy they are and how much they appreciated making their day. "

Also, you don't have to be unique. You need to be sincere.

I just meant that it may not be unique per say, since everything has been done before. But it makes you interesting, which I think is better.

In addition to adding this is an activity, it will help a lot with interviews (If you can describe it saliently). Stats are really important for getting in the door, but interviewing well is so underrated - I think - as far as acceptances are concerned. It can be the difference between getting accepted on Oct. 15 and sitting on 4 waitlists until May 15th.

Be able to discuss this well and I think it helps you a lot.

It's doubtful how much any applicant can really be "unique" in a pool of 40,000+. You just have to communicate an interest and passion for medicine and show that you can handle the path .. And that's easier done when you haven't just fit the textbook 'cookie cutter' mould. This activity you bring up suggests that you have ventured outside of the standard pre-med expectations to bring something special to medicine; you'll be in good shape!
