Hi everyone, this summer I'll be doing research in the med school at my university. The project is very interesting and I do plan putting a lot of time and effort into it. However, I don't really think it will take up all of my time, especially since my PI is so busy doing other work and I don't even actually have to be in lab all the time.

Technically I could just move back home and work from there since I only live 1 hours away, but I'm renting my friend's apartment and already committed to that. I'm also planning on doing MCAT prep and shadowing a couple of doctors. But what other activities can I do that would be helpful for my application and that would justify me staying here and not wasting money on rent?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Make sure there is some consistant clinical experience or volunteer work that is going on. Showing long-term commitment to something early on is definitely advantageous.

In addition, are you actually taking the MCAT this summer. I ask because you mentioned studying in a very brief fashion. Do not review/waste study materials if you are not taking the exam this summer.

Don't try to do too much at once. It looks like you're trying to keep up consistent volunteering, research and studying for the MCAT. If you feel like your reasearch won 't take that much time, go for it, but be sure that you can handle it all. Also, if you aren't planning on taking the MCAT this year, don't waste study materials, as mentioned above. But if you at planning on taking the MCAT this year, don't brush it off as something that you can devote little time to.
