Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know if radiologists in academic medical centers can be sued-- do they have the same liability as those in private practice? Also, how does malpractice insurance work in private practice vs academics? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, they sure can. I have seen it. There is no law or rule that says patients can't sue an academic hospital. Academic attendings are not cavalier, but, on the contrary, are extraordinarily cautious, getting multiple recons and often spending much more time on a study with additional images and recons/reformations than the PP's have time to.

They can be sued like everyone else. An yes, they have the same liability as everyone else, plus they are responsible (read liable) for resident actions as well, to some extent. The only difference is that the hospital/university pays their malpractice insurance premiums.
