hi there!
i am an IMG who is planning for electives in NY,NC, for 3 months.
my home school doesnot provide malractice insurance coverage. so i'll have to buy them.
the prob is that i dunno how to proceed to get a decent quote. some insurance agents replied to my email with quotes for 3 month malprak coverage at 3,000$. thats too much for a med student insurance.

i wanna ask the admin or the members if they have any idea where can i buy malprak insurance cheaper. i feel that since i have no idea of malprak insurance maybe i could be charged more by the agents.....

plz plz......if any of u have any ideas plz respond.
thanx in advance.

Hey Blade,

I am in a similar situation to the above person and wish to buy malpractice insurance for a month during my elective in the US.
I am not being able to see any link in your message except the one forum link in your signature. But I could not find the relevant information there. Please advise.

Thanks.

I also suggest asking your question in the International forum, since this is a situation faced most commonly by international medical students. If you'd like, I can move it there, but please don't double-post. Just let me know.

Thanks Blade.

So far I have found out that there are companies that offer you malpractice insurance for an year, even though if you want only for a month or two. The premiums are about $1200-$1400 which are a bit too expensive for me. I am just dropping the idea of surgery and will change to some other elective that does not require this.

A couple quick questions:

Are you looking to do away electives while you're still a med student abroad?
Or are you looking for rotations to do after you've graduated?

Big difference.

we r still in med school.
we plan to do electives in department for max of 3 months

suratguy! i think u need malprak insurance for all rotations, even inte med, peds.......check that out.!

blade! we r still nowhere! and have no idea!

Check out some of the links below.

I Cant see the links below you suggest.........

Hey I got a question...I am a US Citizen International Medical student in Mexico, in my last year of med school and I am planning on doing some clinical elecitives in the US.......I have 2 questions for anyone who can answer them.....
1. about the MSPE ........when visiting students programs ask for a deans letter as part of a requirement ..do they refer to the MSPE? or just a LOR?
2.- I am going crazy trying to find a malpractice insurance.....anyone has an idea on where can a US citizen international student may purchase it for a reasonable price to do a 1 onth externship?????

(1) The "Dean's Letter" is the MSPE.

(2) I don't know of any companies, personally, but do a quick search for externships or away rotations (or check the links in my Residency FAQ) and I think you'll find some answers there. Be prepared to pay a LOT of money, though, unfortunately. 🙁
