Can someone offer a recommendation for a malpractice insurance company that's reputable and reliable? Especially for a new graduate?

Thanks!

Most State Dental Societies have worked a deal with an insurance company to provide good liability coverage for their members at a good cost.

So talk to the State Dental Society where you will be working for suggestions.

BTW The State Dental Society arrangement in my state has a "Half Price" deal for new graduates.

I would go with an occurrence based policy vs claims made. Check with Fortress or GE Medical protective. If you are going to be joining a organizatoin like the AGD, they also have connections with programs. Just make sure the Ins CO's are rated well.

Maybe you might want to check the ones being offered by your school. Most of them are good in handling malpractice insurance.

I use TDIC (The Dentist's Insurance Company). Rates are very reasonable for the coverage. Luckily, I've never had to use it (knock on wood).

I would advise calling the carrier you are thinking about and asking to speak with their claims department, the choice is as much about the claims process and their assistance as anything else. When you have a patient feel that something is your fault, the person you get to speak with at insurance company is really the "face" of the insurance company. If they are helpful, you will feel that your premium is deserved, if not, then you will not be very helpful. Most of us will not have an actual claim made, but most of us will want to call for advise at some point or another.

I have medical protective and extremely happy with them. Great service, good rates, and supposedly the most aggressive as far as protecting the doctor. They have occurrence based policies and finally the doctor has final say over any suit (to settle or fight). You would think this is the case for every company but in reality most insurance companies have the final say. I even think they have some stat where they win 90% (could even be 95) of their cases that go to trial. Anyway, just my two cents. Give them a look.

Mine is with MedPro (got it through Treloar & Heisel). It's the standard $3/1 million. Costs me about $450/year.

It's my second year out of residency, and I do 3-5 oral sedations on a daily basis with any number of meds (demerol, vistaril, chloral hydrate, phenergan, versed) and also treat GA cases in-office with our dental anesthesiologist (adds further risk to my profile).

I'm assuming my rates will go up next year. If they do, I'll shop around for something else.

Im still in school but I would bank on MedPro considering their policies and the fact that they are a Berkshire Hathaway company... It's hard to go wrong with that.
