Malpractice case with expert witness opinion here: Hip Replacement [$1350/hr Expert Witness]

Practicing orthopedist had a patient who requested an anterior approach for a total hip replacement.

Orthopedist told him he was not experienced but was taking a class on it.

Patient and surgeon agree to proceed.

Bad outcome, surgery took 8 hours, brought back 6 weeks later for posterior revision.

What is the standard for learning new procedures once you're an attending? Seems to be very well delineated as a resident but once you're an attending, there's not a lot of guidance.

Thanks for sharing. I don't think there is guidance. In addition to taking a course like this surgeon did, I would also scrub in with another attending surgeon who does the anterior approach regularly for my first anterior approach case.
