So next thursday I've got an interview down south in Texas. I'm hearing all this stuff about how airlines are SLASHING ticket prices as no one is flying, so I figure I'll wait for a bit before I buy the tix (maybe they'll sell the seats that hadn't been bought for cheap). Last week I had them for 83 from where I am to Texas. This week, they've jumped to 231!! WTF!?! Airtran was the cheapest and I called them and said said those were the lowest I'd get anywhere! I'm a little miffed that my idiocy cost me 150 bones, but what can i do? Any ideas for cheap tix someplace? I thought about standby, but that idea just doesn't sit right with old Trek, i like a bit of certainty (he says...applying to medical school!). Please lemme know if you've got any ideas to help a po boy save some dough. --Trek

Did you try southwest? They are doing cheap fares with 3 days notice (at least they were last week).

Otherwise, you can try priceline.

I was hoping I'd get to fly out to Vegas for a quick weekend..my fall break is coming up. No can do with huge air fares. Hotel rates are down. It has been reported LV is losing 30 million a day..the poor saps. I guess they need my $100/weekend nickel play. 😀 I'm a high roller, by golly!!

When flights are only $83 you should have jumped on it. The probability that a flight as cheap as $83 would go down is lower than it is that it would go up. Plus, the amount that it could possibly go down is much less than the amount it could go up. Who really cares if it goes down another $20, but you should care when it goes up another $150.

Trek,

I've been looking for air tickets to Orlando the past few days. Last week I was able to get tickets from AL to Orlando for $110, but I waited a bit longer. Tuesday night, I went and bought them at $126 round trip. Normally, it would cost ~400 per person. Today, when I looked out of curiousity they had gone back up to $216. When I talked to the agent earlier this week, she said that you have to jump the gun before they change. SOME airlines have a courtesy hold; they'll let you "reserve" your ticket and if you find a lower price elsewhere, you're welcome to cancel the "reserve." Anyways, you probably knew all that. I have a hunch that they're on the rise; our good fortune may be over. We'll just have to wait and see...

Well, i'm pretty much decided to fly standby with some X-fares crap they have. I'm giving myself two days of standbys and if i get on, it'll only cost me 75 to fly. If not, i'm f*cked, but i love a risk! If i'm MIA at UTMB, someone let 'em know i'm stuck in an airport halfway across the country!! --Trek

If you have a little flexiblity try priceline.com. You bid for a price that you want and if it's accepted you have to buy it. You can't choose times but you can choose dates. You have a guaranteed seat on the plane, not standby. They work by buying empty seats on flights because the airlines would rather get something than leave the seat empty. It seems like it would be especially good right now since there are so many empty seats lately. Good luck 🙂

They did have low fares for a while (L.A. to Vermont for $200! Also to Detroit for same!) but since they pared down on schedules due to lighter load factors, the prices did go back up some.

If anyone needs special fare price codes for NWA, I have 'em!

Trek,

Where are you trying to fly into? Hobby (HOU) is closer, but Intercontinental (IAH) would be a lot cheaper. Im not sure how you would get to Galveston, though. I bet there's a shuttle service. BTW, if all us first years look like death warmed over that Friday, its b/c our anatomy and radiology final exam is that day, so dont be too scared.

Good Luck!

Anyone flying from NJ to Las Vegase? Your in luck. The flight out there from Newark, NJ is only $1. Yes, i said $1. The flight back is only $89! Guess they think the gambling junkies from Atlantic city can't resist! 😱

Hi Watto,

I am going to U of Vermont for an interview on 12/10, from LA just like you. May I ask if you are also going to U of VT?

I found a ticket for $193 NWA, wanted to make sure this is the same deal you were referring too. I got it through this site called cheaptickets, but I'd like to know about how you found your ticket,as I don't know if the mentioned site is trust worthy.

Thanks!

Trying2submit, that is a great deal to Burlington. I paid $200, and felt I was extremely lucky to do so. Cheaptickets is fine, I always use Travelocity though.

I had my interview there this past Tuesday. Go to interviewfeedback.com for info on their process. It is generally laid-back but they do have your info so be prepared to defend your application.

The Best Western was cheap and they had an airport shuttle, if you are still looking for a place to stay.

cheaptickets.com and orbitz.com are the sites I always use to find cheap fares and I have never had a problem with either of them...although the cheaptickets.com website can be a bit screwy so they are better to call. Oh, but neither covers southwest that I am aware of, so you should always check southwest.com separately.

I have an interview on Monday in San Antonio and I went on priceline for my ticket. I got it for $325, which although is outrageously expensive, it's cheeper than the lowest fare I could find--$537! UGH!
