"(This is the) first time I've ever been in trouble with the law,” James Verone said from the Gaston County Jail on Friday. “I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic. (That was) what I came up with.”

Verone said he doesn’t have medical insurance. He has a growth of some sort on his chest, two ruptured disks and a problem with his left foot. He is 59-years-old and with no job and a depleted bank account, he thought jail was the best place he could go for medical care and a roof over his head.

Compared to this, the Republican plan for Medicare doesn't seem so bad anymore.

People like this society needs to care about. I am not in his shoe but I can imagine some of his pain. It is something we should not laugh at but have compassion. What if you are in their shoes? Will you like people to laugh at you for this?

People sometimes need to go to the extreme to get the healthcare, or food to survive, so please show some love.

Some people just don't know where to go for various kinds of aid. Did he ever look into Medicaid or a free clinic?

One of my friends used to be a foster care caseworker, and she once had a client who was caught stealing food. The police recognized immediately that he was not a criminal, but instead had his back to the wall and no idea where to turn. His wife had left him and their 3 young children and cleaned out their bank accounts, and he had to choose between buying food or paying his heating bill. 🙁 He didn't know about energy assistance, he knew about food stamps but had no idea how to get them, he knew about child support but thought that was only for women, etc. This agency gave him an emergency package from their food pantry and referred him to the proper community agencies, and got him and the kids back on their feet again.

😍

I've heard SAHMs joke that they should commit a crime because you get all your meals and laundry provided in jail. Methinks someone like that should get away for a few days, KWIM?

👍👍

I feel for the guy. When I watched that video, I just felt bad...he didn't know where to turn and he was worried about his health.

And when "John Q" came out, authorities were telling people not to imitate this, because it won't work.

In all seriousness, he could have probably gotten disability and subsequent hot hot medicaid action until he can be a dual eligible. That being said, getting on disability sucks and it's barely enough to get by, but going to jail for an MD sells headlines.

"He needed to get medical attention, and he refused to be a burden on his sister and brothers."

But he has no problem being a burden to society. There are people out there in similar situations but with no family or friends. I can sympathize with them, but this guy?
