Lolz and an actual paycheck for your work.. Phleb doesn't pay too well where I work. 😕

Yeah I think ours make somewhere around 8-10 an hr?

Hey you will be a hell of an iv stick/blood drawer when your classmates are struggling on those skills.

😱 I guess I can't complain too much about my wages. I only do cuz the hospital 'down the road' from where I work pays about $15.50/hour.

On anther note, I'm pretty excited too about the fact that I won't have to worry about having a freak out during a code or trauma case. Immersed in 'em spending the majority of my hours in our ED.

You'll have that type of advantage as well as a whole slew of other skills to bring with ya.

Yeah im in Texas with an extremely low cost of living (compared to other states). We as nurses on a whole here make less than across the US. Goes the same for most professions

Yeah im sweating some lazy freshman GPA that has brought me down, im hoping with upward trend and a lot of really good healthcare exposure someone will give me a chance.

Both features have gone a looong way for me. The integrity of our motives is not in question, adcoms know we know what we're in for, and the upward trend can almost absolve you of a less than stellar GPA. For example, my pre premed GPA was in the 2's, but since my grades since declaring premed have been at about a 3.6 average (past two yrs at >3.82) my current 3.3 doesn't look as mediocre.

Freshman GPA? Definitely not a deal breaker if you've shown it to be the statistical outlier, or uncharacteristically low for your academic capability.

Yeah I really plan to hit that in my personal statement, that I am not heading into this with much naivety in regards to $$/lifestyle etc.

BUMP!
It would be interesting what people have to say about sleep 1 year after this thread was made.

Personally, I'm asleep by 1 AM and wake up at 7 AM. This is totally my choice though. I have other things I need to do in the morning, but I could sleep till about 10-11 AM if I wanted to most days.

Similar. Sleep by midnight, up at 5-6 depending on what I have to do that day. I know five or six hours is short of what I should be getting, but it's at least manageable.

Yeah but its weird for me. I can't tell you guys how much my brain depends on sleep. If I don't get the full cycles or I wake up in a "deep" cycle of sleep, I can't function well, can't pay attention in class as well, can't study as well, etc. And apparently this used to happen to me a lot so I thought that I just wasn't very efficient with my work

But...this year I got much better at wake up at the "right" time and I think it's working out for me well

I think the cycle aspect is the most important. Get up too early? Zombie. Get up too late? Zombie.

I'm in some pretty hard classes right now, and I admit, I have poor time management skills I guess. Combined with the fact that I really stress out about getting good grades means I don't get much sleep. I feel I need to stay up extremely late studying. I went to bed at 4 am the other night and got up at 7:45 🙁. I usually don't get much sleep

Yeah that's it. I also think it's important to know what bed you like. My dorm bed is rock hard compared to my home. definitely not as comfortable but gets the job done beautifully. So well in fact that I can never feel as rested in my more comfortable bed back home

Put some faith into realizing that more studying won't make you smarter after a certain time

Try drinking tea before going to sleep, using a white noise app, not watching TV before bed, or some of the basic methods you can find online for how to get more sleep. If you really feel you aren't getting enough sleep, it sounds like it's something you have to make a priority.

Don't do this, unless you are very tolerant to caffeine -- a stimulant. I would suggest a nice tall jug of warm milk. But yup, to echo the sentiments of others, 7-9 hours is the recommended amount of sleep for adults. Being a student does not exempt you from sleeping. Sleep deprivation can cause both acute and long-term harm.

Sleep the summer before you start med-school

7 or 8 hours a night. A busy week leaves me with 4 or 5 and I become a zombie. Sleep is important! Try and get as much as you can lol 😛

I have a 4 month old and make sure I'm at least in bed by midnight. I stay up a bit longer on my tablet perusing useless stuff...because me time without baby, homework, husband, or house is nice. Verrrry nice.

I'm getting better at managing schoolwork time. The evenings are when I get the most homework done. Day, not so much.

ANYWAY, my daughter is amazing (knock on wood...) and sleeps until about 7 or 8am then I take a nap with her around 10 or 11am. So I get a lot of sleep...

If I find a comfy place to relax, I'll be knocked out, anytime of the day. I also try to sleep by 11 but somehow that becomes 12 30.

I don't sleep. But one hour in the dream machine helps to keep my sanity.
Where can i buy this machine?

This is extreme. Sleep is the most important thing you can do to help yourself.

I never mess with my sleep or eating time. Malaika has to take care of Malaika. I can't be the best I can be if I am not healthy and happy.

I've always had sleeping issues (4-6 hours) and sometimes I pull all-nighters (procratination). Horrible pattern because I go from not sleeping one day to sleeping all day the next day and repeat. It would be terrible to try to go to sleep regularly again.

A few days ago I didn't sleep in 50 hours.

Yeah my sleeping schedule is messed up haha.

I'm asleep by 9:30 at the latest most nights and wake up at 5. Sometimes I take a nap at work during lunch, but very rarely. Only if it's an especially crappy day. Last night, I went to bed at 11 though and I'm still fine. I'm used to not sleeping very much. Once a week, I get about an hour of sleep and then have to work all day the next day, and sometimes we don't get off work for until after midnight for weeks at a time. That's only when we are doing certain things though. Thankfully, that hasn't been an issue lately.
