This is for everyone to post what they wrote on their application answering the following ADEA question

Are you proficient in any activities requiring manual dexterity?
If yes, please describe those activities.

I'll start it off
- Playing guitar

I do doll, mostly Barbie, makeovers.. sew their clothes, redo their makeups, hair, etc... I love my hobby!
😍 bbpower

golf!! 😀 (good golf that is 😉)

Also:
-piano (but did not mention this in my app, in retrospect, maybe I should have)
-restoring/working on automobiles (I'm not a master mechanic, just like to tinker a bit)

Model building
Carpentry
Polynesian bone carving

Critterbug. I think mentioning the piano is huge!! It improves your ability to use both hands and fingers. Quick, call the schools you applied to and tell them to add that...🙂

Channel-surfing!

Oh... wait. That exercises only the thumb. Heh.

Seriously, several years of working part-time doing 60WPM typing. If that doesn't prove manual dexterity, I don't know what would.

Trumpet
Guitar
Golf
Model Building
Automotive Restoration and Repair
...put what you are personally good at and enjoy

Good job peepz, I'm really glad I started this post. I wanna hear more. Especially the real creative ones. Keep it going!!!!

Well, I took lessons for years and years when I was young, but haven't touched a piano in a long long time, so I didn't feel right mentioning it in my application. I'm not great by any means.

I was also on the golf team in college. However, I did not make the traveling squad. And the time I was called up to play, I couldn't go because the tournament was a two day tournament and it interfered with my OCHEM lab. And because I was on academic scholarship, I felt that OCHEM was more important. So, I wanted to put that on my app also, but didn't, since I didn't consider myself part of the team since I never actually contributed. I just practiced with them.

Golf is my true passion though. I absolutely love it. I know golf is not the best thing to mention when talking about manual dexterity, but it does take great eye hand coordination. I consistently shoot in the high 70's low 80's from the back tees. I think thats quite an accomplshment as golf is about the hardest thing I've ever tried to master, including the piano !!

However, I don't get to play much anymore. I did go out the other day and shot the best round of my life, a 75  (OK, now I'm just bragging 😀 )

j/k

I swear its the truth !!

Don't make me come up to New York and challenge you to a round of golf!! 😛 Whenever you wanna hit the links, I'm there

I'll go with UBTom,

Definitely Typing!

I worked in software development for 2 years typing like a madman!

Before discovering SDN: 20 wpm
After discovering SDN: 60 wpm !!

SDN is ALREADY improving my manual dexterity

critterbug,

SDN should be classified as a part time job. Maybe we can include it as research experience too. What do you think?

Hey, I'm calling the adcoms tomorrow. I'm an official "SDN Research Technician"

The pay sucks though

This threadis funny
My additions
-Manual shoes making. I mean the whole thing from scratch, like cuting the leather and then complete assembly.
-Organic chem Lab
-Pouring models in Dental lab
-Typing , chat, SDN for sure!!
-Fixing Pc hardware
-Installing "black box" for my Cable
-Some electrical work (Love to change them damn fuses)

I repair hearing aid circuits under a microscope. It is very delicate and requires good dexterity. I also do video-otoscopy and cerumen management in my patients small and often tender ear canals. Other than that, I enjoy fishing which requires good knot tying even with cold wet fingers, golf (made my own clubs), pencil drawing, and I can type. Oh yeah...and I can play a great game of "Where is thumb-man?" with my two-year-old.

LOL, nice.

Mine would be violin playing. +pity+ 😀

I am a handy man, love to fix cars, houses and make furniture..

does playing the drum counts?

also do model building and some creative sewing.

yeah man,
too long of a storiy of how i got involved in sewing, but its ctually pretty hard and requires a lot of hand and eye coordination.

and no i am not gay!

actually, on a serious note, I think cross-stitching would be a great way to develop dexterity. I've never tried it, but it looks challenging. My girlfriend would prob raise an eyebrow if she ever caught me doin it though

It's not so far-fetched... We dental professionals DO need sewing skills, you know!

Except instead of knitting needles we use Mayo-Hagars, and instead of yarn we use 3-0 Chromic Gut.

Must... hold back.... insulting you......

Do you guys think that juggling is a goo manual dexterity activity.

I'm up to four objects, and I'm trying to do five.

Just wanted to know what you guys thought.

NDBEAST,

i have to say that your last post was very WEAK! its funny though. after all we do need some things to laugh at here!

lol, I'm just messing with you, man. 😀

Ok, I have a few that might add to the "gay" joke. Keep in mind that I am married with a kid.

Knitting and Quilting (mom taught me)
Counter Cross Stitching (mom taught me)
Hair cutting (saves myself and friends/family a hellofalot of money!
Piano/Guitar
Type 70 wpm

You might be lead to think that my mom raised me to be a sissy, however, at the same time I was heavily involved with sports and I guess that's why my mom felt comfortable enough to get me interested in those things. I wonder what adcoms will think!!

Beast,
i knew you were playing. no hard feelings here man. i like hearing some funny things once in a while here.

as far as nicolas goes, i guess we'll find out what the adcom think about our manual dexterities soon.

Indiana get ready for me.here i come!!!!
god 10 days left now and my nerves are starting to rise.
