Many interviews, but no acceptances

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there anyone out there with many interviews, but no acceptances yet?

Yup, 8 interviews and no acceptances so far. Really blows, but I guess I'll see what happens.

Ah they have a weird system of acceptance/alternate list, long story. It's not really official.

I am curious. If you do not mind sharing. Is it something like, we may accept you but we can not make up our mind just yet?

4 interviews, no acceptances...but no post-interview rejections either. Also, I got many amazing interviews but zero UC interviews (I AM a California resident).

*raise hand*

17 interviews
9 attended so far
2 holds/wl post-interview
0 acceptances

I love being a California resident.

I went on 7 interviews before my 1st acceptance. Sometimes it just sucks but you have to figure if you are around the 6+ interview mark, statistically it would be tough to not get accepted somewhere unless you are just absolute horrid at interviewing. I dont hear of to many people who get a ton of invites w/o eventually getting an acceptance.

so far 8 interviews, 3 waitlists, 1 acceptance.

They come just sucks waiting. Especially if you keep getting waitlists. I like how most of us in here are cali residents ahha....god our state sucks for getting accepted.

11 interviews, 3 waitlists, zero acceptances.

I'm sure all of u waiting for dat letter will get it!!! They odds are highly in ur favor w/ >3 interviews. I'm all of u are expert-interviewees after the first few so this outcome can't be a reflection of ur interviewing skills. It definitely sucks tho (being in this position) but stay hopefull n position; the acceptance will come.

Goodluck!!!!

Gotten a lot of rejections.

To throw in my 2 cents:

For a long time, i had 12 interviews and 0 acceptances. it the worst b/c I just (mentally) assumed that everyone thinks I must be an awful interviewer, blah blah blah, and somehow this translates to some moral/personal failure. After all, everyone thinks they are an above average interviewer and would have rocked it if they were in your shoes right?

its maddening. It started getting better when I started actively telling ppl that i wasnt getting any acceptances. I decided that I wanted to find the ppl who believe and stick with you 100%, especially when things dont look good. You will find out very quickly what type of person they are, and if they are ppl u want to be around long term

you find true friends through adversity

the adversity here is just waiting though...most of the people on this thread have interviewed at multiple places and still haven't heard back from most. its not like they have been 100% waitlisted or 100% accepted.

it sucks to have to wait, but being able to be calm, rational and happy when necessary is an ability in itself.

One thing that I've gathered from the interview process and from reading sdn periodically is this. Sure, interviews are important. But even if you feel like you walked out of your interview with flying colors, there are no really no guarantees (wow, that sounds more obvious that I thought). In fact, the review process is not even 2/3s over. Post-interview the application goes for another comprehensive review by the admissions committee. In some ways, this relieves the pressure during interview time, since you know the interview is not the end-all. How many times have you heard stories where people thought they bombed their interview and gotten an acceptance? Or other times when they think they rocked the interview and received an immediate rejection. Such is life...

Oh yeah, interviewed at a few places so far, no acceptances! Merry Christmas to you, too! 🙂

I agree with the above comment. This is not a place to brag. I just wanted to see if there are other people in my same position. I applied early, and this is dragging on for longer than I thought. Luckily, I have activities to keep me busy 🙂

having 12 interviews is not really adversity unless you had zero acceptances by the end of the cycle BUT i know what you are going through because this process is HELL

My personal input:

When I applied through AMCAS in July, I applied to 12 schools. Then, I ran into some financial trouble with some unexpected expenses, and I had no choice but to cut that list down quite a bit. I ended up filling out a mere 6 secondary applications.

On top of that, I couldn't complete those applications until late October(for financial reasons). I was relieved to have my first interview invite come pretty quickly, but I was waitlisted there. I have 2 more interviews coming up and I was rejected post-secondary from 1 school. So, 3 interviews, 1 rejection, and silence from 2 schools. While it's not a bunch of interviews with no acceptances, this process is still dragging on much longer than I had initially hoped without an acceptance, and it's getting frustrating.

It sucks thinking, "maybe I should look into renewing the lease at my apartment." or "maybe I should start looking for a job for next year."

you did post in my "Even Obama Can't Carry Texas" official optimism thread! It was pretty much me and you...and guess what? we're both accepted haha

There's really no rhyme or reason to it. I think on average your post-interview acceptance rate is about 50%, for most schools. That could be much lower at highly selective places.

Dunno though, I got rejected at places I thought I interviewed very well at and got in to places I thought I bombed. So there may not be a reliable way of knowing.

BTW: Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as bragging at all. I think I misread the post, I thought we were just describing our post-interview results. I apologize for the way I characterized my experience. Sorry.

lol yeah...i think i kicked you off the thread when i read your MDprofile and saw all those interviews stacked up lol. congrats on your multiple acceptances.🙂

You guys actually have it a lot better than me! 1 interview. Just 1. From which I haven't heard back yet. Deafening silence from everywhere else. On a positive note, though, the 1 interview was at my top choice, so that's good... I could really use some good news from them in January... :xf:

6 interviews, 3 waitlists, 1 acceptance, two I haven't heard back from because they were recent. AND my one acceptance told me that I was almost placed on a waitlist and they already sent the letter but then someone turned in their ballot late. I almost crowned myself the waitlist queen.

*raise hand*

17 interviews
9 attended so far
2 holds/wl post-interview
0 acceptances

I love being a California resident.

Is there something bad about being a CA resident??? I'm a CA resident, do we have some sort of disadvantage?

I'm not applying yet, but just curious.

December-March are the magical months, guys. that's when most acceptances will be coming out. Chin up!

To the people with multiple interviews, chill. If I had 6 interviews so far, and a solid app, I wouldn't be too worried about myself. Chances are, you'll get an invite somewhere.

6 Interview Invites, attended 4, 1 'active hold', and no acceptances

if you have 5+ interviews and no acceptances, you should be writing letters/updates telling them how much you love the school and would want to attend if you haven't done so already.

For the schools that waitlisted us, isn't it better to send the Letters of Interest/Update closer to May since that is when the waitlist movement starts?

oy, it seems kind of mean of them to tell you that instead of just congratulating you on your acceptance and calling it a day! and one other thing-- his name is spelled goethe 😉

anyway, the main reason i popped into this thread is to say that i'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of y'all... the waiting is terrible. but remember that SDN is full of over-achievers who get accepted early. for most people the good news is yet to come!

it's about persistence
who cares about everyone else or what they're doing
lock in your own seat first

take initiative. don't sit around and wait for something good to happen to you.

5 Invites.
3 Wait lists.
1 Decision Pending :xf:
1 Interview to attend still.

Lol. I wasn't complaining...it was still an acceptance 🙂 They were actually very nice about it and called me (it was early Thanksgiving week) because they didn't want me to have bad news over thanksgiving when I'm actually accepted since they couldn't send out the acceptance packet till the following week. Basically, they called to say throw the first letter away.

Thanks for the spelling. I haven't read this quote in years but it always stuck with me 😀

No disadvantage. Except that we have one of the largest instate applicant pools, only a few schools (compared to number of applicants), all of which have extremely high average stats. For most people, the state school is a safety. For Cali residents...not so much.

For people who have yet to get an acceptance post-interview, perhaps it would be worthwhile to take a minute and review exactly how previous your interviews went and how they could have been better.

My first interview was at my top choice school (nervewracking, absolutely!) and although I could've postponed it, I decided to take my chances and went. I found that although I was able to get a grip on my nerves, I failed to talk about ALL of my accomplishments and felt that my answers to some questions lacked substance. I ended up being waitlisted at that school, so although there might be a small chance of getting in later, I pretty much bombed it. But after that, I thought about what I could've said, in fact, should have said, to make an impression. :prof:

Put yourself in your interviewers shoes, they're probably an MD/DO/PhD and while they talk to you, they might ask themselves, "Is this person one of us? Does this person have what it takes to be like us? Are they willing to make the sacrifices necessary for a career in medicine?" Your answers to their questions should encompass these qualities and blatantly stand out as "YES!". I'm sure you guys already know that you have to talk your butt off in blind interviews, of which I'm not a fan because of the extra work on your part. But it's essential to make a mental list of all your ECs and SAY THEM! I kept this in the back of my mind and for the rest of my interviews I answered sincerely and have gotten into almost every other school I visited and no rejections. No matter who your interviewer is, (and believe me, I've had some tough/unpleasant/super-formal interviewers) if you can make them feel that they were you in this moment of your life, you're golden. Believe that there is always room for improvement in your interviewing skills and make changes, don't stay at a mediocre interviewing level!

If anyone has any personal questions about interviewing, PM me :luck: Good luck to everyone!

2 interviews, 2 acceptances and 2 more interviews to go. All DO.

Do you guys think there is a difference in MD vs DO acceptance rates? My boyfriend went on 8 MD interviews, 1 acceptance, 6 waitlist and 1 rejection.

Hmmmmm......

+1 Good news hopefully Feb 1st for me.

For the two wailists so far, I sent one an intent letter right after the interview and then got WL'ed. Then after my other interview, I sent them an intent as well hoping I would just get in, another WL...I really have nothing to update with except grades but I called both up and both said they rank their kids at the end of May so I don't know how much it really matters at this point.
