Ok i understand the classic diffs between marfans and ED but i find alot of diseases will say that it can be due to marfans or ED but then ill read another source that says both can cause it. I mean i udnerstand they are going to often present the same since tissues often have collagen and elastin but will you ever get a question where both would be choices on something ambiguious. For exmaple in robbins they mention marfans as a big risk for medial necrosis and risk of aneurysm and i just read in harrisons that both marfans and ED are risks for med. necrosis and aneurysm. So i am just wondering in a case like that would there ever be a "better" answer choice?

marfans much more associated with cystic medial necrosis. However, I don't know about the rest of the risk factors they share, e.g. berry aneurysms

def some good points brought up...

Berry aneurysm: AD PCKD, ED, Marfans
Medial necrosis: marfan's (cystic). ED may have a different type of medial necrosis?
hyperextensibility of joints/skin: ED, Marfans
Dissecting AO aneurysm: Marfan's (more often)
Decreased ceruloplasmin: ED Type 9 (X-Linked Recessive)--like Wilson's
Deficiency in lysyl oxidase: ED Type 9; this is the NZM that utilizes Cu
Deficiency in lysyl hydroxylase: ED type 6 (AD i believe); this is the NZM that utilizes Vit C so---so Scurvy and ED type 6 may present similarly
Dislocation of the lens: Marfan's
Locus heterogeneity (random genetics to think about)--ED

hope this helps; g'luck

the fact is that in clinical medicine nothing is as cut-and-dry as it's presented in Robbins. The distinction between Marfans and Ehlers Danlos WILL, however, be very easy on step 1.
