I'm currently interested in schools that have faculty researching marital dysfunction and close interpersonal relationships. I am aware of about 6 programs that offer opportunities in this research, I was wondering what others are well known (or not so well known).

I am looking for Clinical Psych PhD programs.

Dr. James Bray (former APA president) does work with divorce and remarriage, though I'm not sure he works with students. He was out of the Baylor College of Medicine the last time I checked.

University of Colorado (Whisman)
UNC (Baucom)
University of Denver (Markman)
UCLA (Christensen; Bradbury)
USC (Margolin)
University of Tennessee (Gordon, Stuart, Moore)
Stony Brook (O'Leary, Heyman)
Indiana (Holtzworth-Monroe)
University of Iowa (Lawrence)
Purdue (South)
University of Colorado - Denver (Allen)
University of Georgia (Beach)
Clark University (Cordova)
University of Maryland (Epstein)
University of Delaware (Laurenceau)
SMU (Simpson)
Texas A&M (Snyder)

I'm sure I'm forgetting people, too.

This isn't my area but I have a classmate who is interested in this... UT Knoxville seems like the mecca for this area.

Also, are you open to Counseling PhD programs? I could see your area of interest being commonly found in these programs...

Ditto Baucom. One of my ex's had a wonderful experience. Then again, someone I taught with had an icky experience. Still, the research seemed to be consistent and relevant with good guidance from all the gossips I encountered...

Good luck with your decision!

Thanks so much for all of the input. It's been difficult to find people, as well as find programs in areas I could live in (and find employment for my boyfriend).

I've thought about Counseling, however I am very research driven and feel that Clinical is the best choice for me.

Dr. Epstein at UMD, while he's GREAT, doesn't supervise clinical students, as he is in the Marital and Family Therapy program.

One of the most interesting research programs is John Gottman's work with coding couples' interactions and predicting marriage breakup. He's in Seattle, and I believe. Levinson (Gottman & Levinson, 1988 -- the classic study) was/is at Berkeley. They have a great program, too.

John Gottman does not mentor clinical students any longer.
