I posted this in the spouses/couples forum but got no takers...

I'm applying for admission in Fall 2005 and am engaged to be married June of next year! We're very excited and are looking towards moving back to New York City for medical school. Does anyone have any experience with marriage housing (pricing versus NYC rent, how big it is, proximity to school etc.) . My first choice right now is Weill Medical College and their website says that they offer special housing for couples and faculty, but they don't say what the subsidized rate is or how many square feet the apartments are. Also, if we decide that married housing is for us, do we have to relocate every year in some kind of lottery or can we actually settle on one place throughout the 4 years? Thanks for the help!

At Cornell first year students who are married have the pleasure of NOT living in Olin Hall (the 1st year dorm). Most married couples and families live in Lasdon House on 70th Street, which for a 1 bed apt costs ~1300 a month. If you look at this floor plan: http://www.med.cornell.edu/housing/pdf/bui_las.pdf, the "P" room on the top left is about the size of the typical 1 bed apt in Lasdon. Pretty decent sized living room area, all utilities excluding phone and cable are included in the price, comes with kitchen, bathroom, and some basic furniture. For the price, size, and proximity to campus, probably one of the best deals you're going to find anywhere in this area. The other options on the housing website for married couples are the 77th street apts and the new buildings on roosevelt island.

The way Cornell med housing works is that you basically have squatter's rights...once you move into an apt, you can keep it as long as you're a student at WMC (unless your building is being renovated, which will force some people to make one move w/in their building during med school).
