I just received a letter from Marshall University, Joan C Edwards School of medicine. In October LCME placed the school on probation for not being in compliance with 10 of the LCME's 128 standards.
Issues include:-
1) Insufficient attention to diversity in the recruitment of students and faculty
2) Insufficient attention to vertical integration of the first and second year curriculum and learning skills.
3) Insufficient student support in areas of financial counseling, career counseling, scholarships and wellness.

and some more issues......

Wow,
So the LCME's score for this year is:
1 closing
2 probation placements

At a school I interviewed at I asked the interviewer how they thought they would fair when inspected by the LCME next year.
His response: "We are scared to death."

Yeah, in an article on SUNY Upstate's potential probation, their vice president for academic affairs said "the accrediting group has been scrutinizing schools much more closely in recent years and making more recommendations of probation."

This is very unfortunate! LCME is definitely cracking down. Good luck to the school and applicants.

what incredible horsesh*t. They have their own flavor of diversity, and don't have the advantage most richer medical schools have when it comes to applicants.

Are you serious? it was barely even talked about in the thread guy. The thread was mostly about Upstate.
It's also being discussed in the application thread for this season.

I don't think Marshall will have a problem fixing these things. I don't know about diversity of faculty, but I think increasing the diversity of students there would be hard. for two reasons.

1. For one, they go by a very strict instate bias. Only those with great ties to the state, or who live in neighboring counties, are offered interviews.
2. The state has a low minority population compared to other areas.

I am sure they will find a way to overcome this, however. The medical school is very important and a source of great pride for the Huntington community and Marshall in general.

Anyone have a list of schools that have been placed on probation the last 10 years or so? I know of George Washington, UT San Antonio, Ponce, SUNY Upstate, and now Marshall. Any more?

I posted this list in the UTHSCSA thread
George Washington-Oct 2008 to Feb 2010
TCMC (The Commonwealth Med. Col.)- June 2011 to current
MCP Hahnemann (now known as Drexel)- Oct 1998 they were informed that they were about to be put on probation, MCP appealed, won the appeal, and the LCME rescinded the decision
San Juan Bautista- ??? until accredition revoked this month
Temple- Feb 2003 to Feb 2004
Universidad Central Del Caribe (Puerto Rico)- Oct 1994 to Feb 2000
Ponce School of Medicine (Puerto Rico)- Dec 1994 to Feb 1999. Placed on probation again in 2010 (I think?) and is currently on probation
Rosalind Franklin- June 2004 to June 2005
University of Saskatchewan (Canada)- Feb 2003 to Feb 2005
UTHSCSA- Oct 2011 to current

I might be missing one or two but that list is fairly complete, AFAIK

So probation is not completely rare but is not entirely common either

Interesting to note that back in 2008, University of Alberta was threatened with probation. They were deficient on 12 of the standards but successfully avoided the probation. (UTHSCSA's letter said there were 10 unmet standards but this news source says 11 deficiences but 2 were reduced in severity upon appeal http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/ed...nio-s-medical-school-on-probation-2222609.php) Strange that UTHSCSA couldn't avoid it. Quick note is that SUNY Upstate hasn't met the requirements yet as they've appealed. That's why they're not listed on the LCME site as being on probation

Thanks. Ouch at TCMC....2 years in and already on probation.

Maybe the school should put the state of West Virginia on probation for not being more diverse.

+1 No kidding. I think you'd have to go to Scandinavia to find an area with a higher % of white people.

LOL!

Anyhow, Marshall is now offering a PREMED program that specifically targets students of color. I personally disagree with this approach because this strategy itself is exclusive in nature and limits the number of spots for the applicants in the general pool. I support more of an approach that makes the school more open to OOS students. That will create a more heterogeneous pool of qualified applicants of diverse background and ethnicity. I don't agree that skin color itself defines diversity, I believe it is more of a person's background, upbringing, and life experience.

Also, Marshall is already actively undertaking efforts to work with LCME to correct the infarctions cited, I think we were told that we hv 2 LCME consultants onsite to help us with the remedial plans. A new Dean will also be sourced from outside 😀'

Yeah, I'm from Huntington and I don't agree with what you're saying. A huge mission of the school is churning out doctors that stay in the area. The best way to do that is to accept students who have lived in the area and have ties there, making them more likely to stay/come back after residency. West Virginia needs more doctors who practice rural medicine. Besides, although it is very small, there is a substantial african american population in Huntington. I think Marshall is trying to target that population for future students.

Secondly, MUSOM gets a lot of money from the state, which is from the taxpayers of the state. Why should taxpayers of the state finance educations of students not from the area and not going to be sticking around after medical school? Even if they charge a ton of money for OOS people, they are still not helping the people of West Virginia in the long run.

LCME sucks just plan and simple...they try to implement all these student functions which are suppose to "benefit students" when they are really just increasing our debt via making tuition more expensive.

For example, WHY do students have to pay for a financial counselor, SURELY if you have made it this far you can read, I think going to google or the public library can suffice for all students wanting to know about finances. Another example, WHY do schools need to spend money on wellness, if you want to workout just buy a freakin gym membership. I could go on...

It is clear the LCME doesn't give a crap about students, otherwise they would not let hundreds of students in PR try to find a new school IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR and be a leading cause of tuition skyrocketing.

Am I the only one who went to med school for "medical education" not a gym plan....not a library, and surely not someone who increases my tuition to tell me how already debt I am in?
