Do you "docs" know that marijuana cures all the akathisia and whatnot caused by those pernicious DRUGS such as haldol and risperdal and on and on?

I've heard the first time a haldol shot is experienced it is like "falling into a viod" and that risperdal felt physically like crucifixion!!!!

What do you people with hearts feel about using the only medicine on the planet that you can't overdose on...mary jane(cannabis)?
The only medicine that can allow people to safely come off the poison so called anti-phychoti....i just can finsh typing that name for those drugs...they cause(or HIGHLY influence one to experience) apathy and negative emotions and are HORRIBLE!

Something is telling me that this thread isn't going to last...🙄

I need someone to back me up on this, but I think that cannabis (i.e. marijuana) can precipitate/worsen psychosis in pts with schizophrenia. It also contains a lot of toxins, many of which haven't even been studied, and it isn't good for your lungs. And you can overdose on it; extremely high doses can cause aggresive bx (HY Behavioral Science; boards studying, sigh). And as long as we're using anecdotal evidence, I have never met a smart pot smoker-- you should meet my uncle. Very, very bad for the brain.

Before this thread gets closed I just wanted to point out that it makes absolutely no sense to demonize one substance as "all bad" while promoting another that's "all good." It might make sense when you're stoned and feel "all good" but I'm sure once you sober up you'll see my point.

Marijuana is definitely known to worsen psychosis, and there's even a strong hypothesis that it can sometimes actually trigger a psychotic episode/schizophrenia. Prior to med school I worked with 25 or so people with schizophrenia and all ut one or two of them were young people who had a psychotic break while smoking marijuana/using LSD/PCP/Crystal Meth. This is obviously a small sample size, but it definitely made me wonder about the connection between drug use and psychosis. Whether it's causal or whether psychotic people are more likely to use drugs is still up in the air, but from what I've been reading lately I believe there's a growing consensus that marijuana can at least rarely be cited as a causal agent.

As an interesting case report:

I lived in South Asia for a time doing sociology research and we had a village "Sahdu" or Holy Man, who clearly had what we would call schizophrenia. He had thick dreadlocks that caused even the locals (who didn't speak English) to call him Bob Marley. . . if you didn't speak the local language it'd sound like . . tika tika hunachua Bob Marley. . . tika tika ramruhuncha. . .etc. Pretty funny.

Anyway, the locals would invite him into their houses on an informal rotating basis and feed him and give him a place to sleep. They would also harvest the marijuana, which was a native plant and grew all over the place, and bundle it up and give it to him. He must have had a stockpile of a ton of marijuana somewhere. He would just sit in the temple smoking marijuana all day every day. He didn't have any healthcare. There were no psychiatrists in this rural South Asian village. Marijuana was his medication and in sufficient quantities seemed to mellow him out. I doubt it was an ideal medication but high dose THC seemed to be somewhat palliative for him. The support from the local villagers was also pretty amazing. I think that the villagers willingness to take him in and take care of him was somewhat due to the fact that everyone was related somehow (it was a pretty remote village after all). He's a guy who's story has always stuck with me.

I am currently enrolling in a study looking at bipolar disorder co-morbid with substance abuse. The preliminary data suggests demon weed predisposes bipolar folks to worse courses including more psychosis, confusion and possibly suicidality.

I don't get it-- are you enrolling in the study as a subject or enrolling subjects as a PI? 😆 Sorry; again, a little sleep deprivation.

Don't do pot, it smells.

Intravenous THC in high doses has been shown to induce hallucinations; however CBD (another cannabinoid in cannabis) is being studied as a novel antipsychotic. This may explain why 25 million Americans smoke regularly and, other than mild paranoia, the vast majority experience no psychosis. However, there is a great deal of evidence that it can exacerbate psychosis in predisposed individuals. Based on real-world experience, i disagree that high doses cause aggression, despite what HY says - sedation and headache would be much more likely.

It was written by a psychologist.

I think the last time I heard someone use the term "mary jane" for marijuana unironically, the dude was wearing a headband (unironically).

I can't even count the number of kids I have tried to get ok to graduate after their extensive marijuana use made them not care at all and head for flunking out.
