Maryland Dental School!

Hi guys! This is my first post of SDN! Maryland dental school is my first choice and I am not a resident. However, I currently go to university of maryland as an undergrad. I was wondering what kind of stats I would need to get in! I heard it wasn't that hard... I'm afraid my GPA may drop down to a 3.0 but will have a good DAT score! Help please! Also, if anyone is currently attending maryland dental school or has been accepted... any advice or anything i should know about??

If I remember correctly, Maryland matriculants have avg GPA of 3.4-3.5 and 20 DAT. It's doable but you are sorely mistaken when you heard that getting in "wasn't that hard". I guess you, like most people in society, have not noticed that dental school admission has become infinitely more difficult over the last 5, 6 years.

Yeah i know that 3.4-3.5 is the average GPA... i've also retaken about 3 science classes but have improved a lot my second time around, how will the admissions committee see that?

OKay so i recalculated my GPA and it's about 3.23 (However i retook FOUR science classes.. messed up freshmen and sophomore year). I will have a very good DAT score. What are my chances at maryland now? 🙁

With your subpar GPA, my guess is that you'll need +20 in each section to be considered a competitive applicant at Maryland. How are you so sure you'll get very good DAT scores? Do your practice tests indicate that?

It doesn't matter if you retake classes both scores are figured into your gpa. So it is very hard to raise our gpa by retaking classes.

when i was at my maryland interview for the 08 cycle, there was a guy that was applying for the 3rd time. he was a maryland grad, and it was his 3rd interview. take what you may from that.

I personally know a guy who had 4.0 GPA 20 DAT attending Maryland who still couldn't make it (he was intervied, though). I know he doesn't have any negative stuff on his record. YES, GETTING INTO MARYLAND IS ALL THAT HARD.

Sure 20 is a good score but what was the breakdown of it? Perhaps he had really high science scores but a very low RC which could've kept him out... that's what thing that i could think of...

My GPA was 3.91 and my overal DAT was 19 (science:21) and I didn't get in to Maryland. If your GPA is lower then 3.5, your DAT has to be really high. I know a guy whose GPA was 3.2,but his DAT was like 24 and he got in to Maryland.

Do not base your ability to get in based on the scores you see posted here there and everywhere. Remember the scores you see are averages so it means that people had above that avg as well as below that avg. In addition, it is about the whole application..that means grades, DAT scores, your personal statement, volunteer and dental experience(shadowing). Try to get in contact with the dean of admissions at the school(s) you are interested in attending and ask their opinion about what you should do. they are the decision makers and it doesn't hurt that you get your name out there early. good luck
