I have heard that some out-of-state students at the University of Maryland were able to reclassify themselves as in-state residents for the purpose of lower tuition after a year. I would love to hear the circumstances of SDNers who have tried this and whether or not they were successful.

Thanks.

I moved to Maryland after getting admitted and was able to reclassify after 1 year of stay in Maryland. Documents asked were lease doc's, driv lic and tax filing info.

Any other experiences with changing to a Maryland resident?

I talked to an out-of-state D4 student at Maryland during my interview and she said she changed residency to in-state but it was a pain in the butt. I think it took her 2 years to do so though.

I was never able to do it... I had to suck up the out-of-state fees for 4 years. 🙁

I got it halfway through second year after hearing rumors that it was extremely hard to get. I applied thinking I'd just try every semester, and ended up getting it first shot. Might as well try!

Do you know why you were unable to get residency? Why are some able to get it, while others don't? The cost difference is really significant, so I would want to make sure I did everything possible to get in-state tuition by second year.

Can anyone elaborate on tax filing info? We don't need to get a job with an income right......I would also like other people's experiences on this as OOS tuition for all 4 years may be a deal breaker for me... ("may").
