Maryland: Time from interview to decision

Cost is definitely an issue, because I have trouble justifying paying twice as much for a comparable education at an out-of-state school. I also have friends in the area and I have always liked Baltimore, but this was not a major factor in my decision. I know several students at umd and they all have very positive things to say about the school, plus I like how the classes are usuallly over by noon every day. There is a general notion that both the students and teachers are very friendly and helpful - I think everyone who has visited the school for interviews also got this impression. Overall, I have never heard anything negative about the school besides the fact that some of the facilities are showing their age. It seems that the school is addressing these issues however, and wants to make a genuine effort to satisfy its students.

i agree, the medical school building has just about had it. The hospital and the library are incredible, though! i remember them saying at the interview that they were building a new lecture hall for the med students, but i didn't catch when it would be finished...anyone know? let's hope for fall of 2005 🙂

They said the new lecture hall will be ready for the start of classes in Fall 2005. Perfect timing, I say!

Yea...it seems very promising.

At this point I think I'd go to UMD, because I just got the best vibe there. You can compare numbers and statistics all day long, but when looking at a group of schools all within similar ranges...you just gotta go with where you thought you would fit in best. I really liked Maryland, but we'll see. I received a scholarship from another (private) school, which levels the costs to that of UMD. Decisions, decisions.

FLH (freshman lecture hall) should be finished by Fall 2005. If it isn't; I've heard that the new lecture hall in HSF II (health science facilities) will be used temporarily.

To those who have been accepted--
are you still waiting to hear from a bunch of other schools or are you pretty set on Maryland?

yeah, i'm wishing for a scholarship like that...did you apply for it or did they just offer it with your acceptance letter? did they know they had to compete with your Maryland acceptance?

hey guys,

I interviewed at UMD yesterday (11/29)...had a good time, they were both really layed back...but I've stopped trying to analyze how well I did...after 8 interviews, I think its just best not to think about these things. The students were really cool and the tour was really good! I can't believe how much UMD is expanding! All sorts of new buildings are popping up and of course, their shock trauma is awesome.

Anyway...I REALLY hope I hear back from them soon...after two waitlists (WFU, Vandy), an acceptence from UMD would be VERY nice.

Yeah, I'm really hoping to hear back from them before the holidays start...whats been the avg time that ppl have heard back? 3 weeks?

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Yep, that's when I heard. And that's also what Foxwell said the adcom was trying for.

...and I hope you hear you've been accepted before the Holidays too! 👍

From the looks of things, the ADCOM has reviewed files through at least Nov. 3. That means, at the next meeting on Dec. 6th, they'll be looking over files from the week of Nov. 8 (Mon. and Wed.) and maybe the week of Nov. 15. I wonder if they address only one week's interviews at a time.

Glad your interview went well gobbelty_gook!

No, i Didn't apply. They just gave it to me. And no they didn't know about maryland, because I didn't have maryland at that point. I got the scholarship from my first acceptance. 👍 🙂

am i just blind or does maryland not require a deposit to hold a place in the class?

Nope, no deposit! I was going nuts trying to figure out if there was anything about a deposit, but then I checked my handy dandy MSAR and it said that UMD doesn't require a deposit.

Oh ok. Thanks ms2209 🙂

Does anyone want to sell his or her UMD acceptance? 😀 Comon, at least one of you want to sell it, haha.

Has anyone who interviewed on Monday Nov. 8 or Wednesday Nov. 10 heard back yet? Just a few more days until the next Adcom meeting . . .

How much will you give me? 😛

Haha, right now, I only can give you my Albany interview. If I get accept to other school, I can give you that acceptance. But, with all those places that you have alrdy interviewed with, I dont' think you want any of my acceptance or interview. In conclusion, NOTHING that will look attractive to you. So, how about pure cold CASH? Just add that to my med school debt, and I will pay you when I become a doctor. 😀

You know, maybe all you lucky people with acceptances should start the "Official UMD Class of 2009 Thread." 😀 I'd do it, but without acceptance in hand, it wouldn't be right. I see Baylor people have a thread up and running...

Woops. I meant Temple...

Has anyone started thinking about where they want to live? The dorms are so freaking expensive. I found one place near Homewood (the Hopkins undergrad campus) which is a bit cheaper, but I haven't been looking too hard. But if anyone is semi-sure they are going to UMD and wants a roommate, then PM me.
