I have the option to go to one of these two schools.
At maryland, I will borrow between $200,000 and $250,000 to cover everything. It is a great school where I will have great dental training. Without question I will have a far better education and training at Maryland and I will be better prepared to practice dentistry once I graduate.
At McGill, I have in-province tuition where it is very very cheep, it is basically free compared to the US price tag. I will borrow about $50,000 to cover tuition and living expenses for all four years. It is a small class with about 29 students, and the first two years I would take classes with the Med students. However, from what I hear, the clinical training that students receive is very weak compared to any other school in Canada or the US. I can forget about even extracting a tooth while a student there. My dentist, who is a professor at McGill, told me to not consider McGill if I got into a US school. He said McGill is great if I want to become an academic dentist, which I don't. But he also told me that there are ways to make up my lack of clinical skills after graduation if I decide to attend, for example doing a residency.
I'm just curious to know what some of you would do in my shoes. I also have duel citizenship, so getting funding isn't an issue. Also, I plan to practice in the US.

Do you have a lot of money, because the out of state amount for Maryland is in the 90s a year for everything. I am just making sure you did the math correctly

$50,000k for a school and you're considering turning that down? Good hands is subjective and will vary student to student...

True, I didn't mention that I qualify for in-state residency at Maryland as well. It is where I lived for most of my life and I kept my resident status while away in Canada. And I will probably borrow closer to $250,000. Also, looking at the numbers again, I will borrow between to $80,000-100,000 for McGill, depending where I live. Regardless, is McGill is much cheeper.

There is absolutely not comparison between McGill and Maryland.

That's like comparing Harvard vs. LSU.

Go to McGill - Cheaper and way more prestige.

McGill has a great program, and there is no way Maryland's program is $150k+ better than it.

One of my interviewers at Stony Brook spoke really highly of McGill's program, after asking why I didn't apply to any Canadian schools (I'm Canadian). McGill prestige >>> Maryland too, if that's something important to you..

Good luck on your McGill interview! See you there on the 8th.

I'm also Canadian and my interviewres asked me the same thing. They don't know that we need at least 3.8+ to have a shot at Canadian schools lol. Even one's DAT score is 25-28, he/she won't have a shot if GPA is below 3.8.

To OP, go to McGill. It's a great school (although old facilities and cold weather are downsides) and very well respected school with EXTREMELY CHEAP TUITION.

You should better watch out what you're saying. Did you ever been to these schools? Stop acting like you're in a position of judging schools' prestige.

Really? Please check your grammar.

Are you from Quebec ? Do you have the marks to get into McGill ? I know you need a 3.85+ for OOP student to get into McGill.

Or else what...you'll report me to the Internet police? Shame on me for sharing an opinion different than yours.
But to answer your question, yes I have been to these schools. I don't see why that matters, though. International reputation speaks for itself.

Your example was inappropriate. I'm pretty sure you're not a dental student because you're juding dental schools based on international reputation which does not apply to dental schools. There is NO Rankings for dental schools.

Both Harvard and LSU are excellent schools and OP was simply asking McGill vs Maryland. Your example was silly and inappropriate.

McGill, McGill, McGill, McGill... First off this is Canada's Harvard, amazing school, beautiful location, dirt cheap education (I don't think you'll find it that cheap ANYWHERE else) and most of all you get to live in montreal-- the most amazing city, not to mention cost of living there is super low and the scene is unreal. this is a no brainer.

1) it's called an analogy. I never said LSU is a bad school; Harvard is just a clearly better school in comparison. Maryland isn't a bad school, either; it's just not as reputable as McGill. So you, too, can get off your high horse and stop assuming things.

2) if you think reputation doesn't matter when it comes to running a business, then you're sadly mistaken. Yes, a dentist is a dentist, but some clients actually look at where you went to school.

Ignore somedayover, he's just mad b/c no one agrees w/ all of his viewpoints. :eyebrow:

Who gives an F about prestige in dental school. Patients don't care and neither should dental students. The question is, which school is going to give me the best education?

Oh really? lol it's just three of you (school admin, amalgam, imao) have different view points not all. I'm sure there are someone who agrees with my points. 🙂

1) Still awful analogy...

2) I've shadowed two dentists for over 2 years, both from dental schools that are not well known. However, I've never seen a single patient asking where my dentists graduated from. Most patients were interested in parking spaces that clinic has and the price of treatment they will have. Both dentists have well established clinic and make over 500k.

Once you become a dentist, it comes to your skills and management not where you graduate from.

I hope you get into a dental school and understand what I'm saying.

Agree. For me, I would weigh more on the quality of education + tuition over international reputation (mostly for their undergraduate + graduate programs like general MSc, PhD and MBA) when choosing dental school.

mcgill for sure. save all that money. you can improve handskills in your residency

McGill is a school that has been living off its reputation for years now. I spoke with one of the board of directors of McGill and he told me they almost closed the program down about 10 years ago. It is a poorly funded program that puts the dental students with the medical students for the first 2 years just to save money.

To your second point about clients looking at where you get your degree. If you are a bad dentist from harvard, do you really think that being from harvard will be enough to over come the years of botched root canels and tooth extractions? People will stop coming to you through word of mouth and your business will suffer.

I say go to the place that will give you the best chance to be a sucessfull dentist, do not choose it because you think one school has a better name than another.
