CDC apparently put out a new guideline for pharmacies and it states that everyone SHOULD wear a mask while in the pharmacy. Some zealot pharmacist who over interprets everything says we are now required wear masks. Im not forcing my techs to wear them since we have a plastic sheet barrier thats covering the entire front part of the pharmacy top to bottom.

Any thoughts on this? Are we absolutely REQUIRED to wear them?
 
It only takes one of you coughing without a mask to infect others.

That person could be asymptomatic also. He/she sneezes into the air...

Can you trust your techs to never get infected?

Guidelines are just that... guidelines. Unless the governor of your state makes it an official law/order with penalties then I don't see why you have to do it. That being said, if common sense dictates that you should wear a mask then you should do so. I think there's a massive difference in risk between working in a high-volume, high-staffed pharmacy versus a low-volume, low-staffed (1 pharmacist 1 tech) pharmacy.

Think about a civil lawsuit against a “wealthy” pharmacist.

Lawyer: you are an educated healthcare professional right? You have a doctorate degree. Why didn’t you follow the CDC guidelines?

Because they're guidelines and not rules, and guidelines are not absolute/black and white because they're always changing so they are recommendations at best. It'll simply be up to the employer to decide whether to take action... I can't see any pharmacist at CVS getting sued for not wearing a mask if Corporate is silent on the issue...

Regardless of the outcome, your good name would be destroyed online. No one would ever hire you.

So yeah, put on that mask. If not for your health, do it for your career.
 
I would wear it as long as I am provided with clean masks by somebody.
I cannot find masks. I ordered few boxes of mask through wholesalers about a month ago but they are not sending any of them.

If CDC guidelines were the holy grail then doctors prescribing >90MME opioids for any non-cancer patient should also be sued because they are putting their patients at higher risk of overdose.

Majority of lawsuits related to doctors overprescribing opioids have to do with fraud, waste and abuse (illegal prescribing, drug diversion etc). For those dose-related cases that include "real" doctor-patient relationships, it is usually gross negligence and prescribing of doses several times higher than any recommended guideline (to the point where it doesn't matter what the actual CDC target threshold is).

Also, CDC guidelines are usually developed from/cite other clinical guidelines so yes I agree that in the case of opioids there is a stigma associated with prescribers prescribing high doses of opioids but that is because many other groups have already observed this so the community as a whole is aware of the epidemic prior to the CDC guidelines being published, and the CDC just 'publicized' this more.

Contrast that to the CDC guidelines for coronavirus where the government was under extreme pressure to develop guidelines de novo using pretty much no data (since the only 'relevant' experience we had started when covid hit the U.S.), so these are very fluid guidelines and I doubt anyone would be penalized for not following them.
 
Anyone know of a mask that doesnt cause face and eye irritation? Tried a few different kinds and they all make me want to itch my face and eyes, and leaves my face/eyes red and itchy. Makes it dangerous because I'm itching my eyes. Cant focus well either with constant itching sensation. I tried to make it so when I breathe my breath doesnt go upwards but doesn't help. :/
 
wear the mask - CDC makes guidelines, your employer makes the policies - we have to wear a mask anytime we are in the hospital - makes sense, even if you are in retail and thus have fewer employees, you can infect easy other - and we all (most of us) know people we work with who have been positive for COVID
 
Im not making my employees mandatory but if they want to they can. I dont think it’s necessary unless you’re sympathetic. We have a plastic barrier top to bottom cover our front counter and have no direct contact with patient. All are wearing gloves and cleaning everything patient touched with alcohol.
We dont wear masks for the flu, so i dont see why we need to for this. Again, i get it. This isnt the flu blah blah blah. Its the same damn route. So if youre gonna argue about that bs, just go away.

I would think they wouldn't have much room to speak. Law school is nearly just as expensive and just as, if not more saturated, for a rather low starting salary.

Yea I was thinking along these same lines. Not sure that asking a lawyer that question was relevant to anything which was previously discussed.

However, I am off topic on just about every thread that I respond to so I totally get it...
 
There is a lot of shady lawyers out there. Just because you don’t think you can be sued doesn’t mean you won’t be sued.

So you're saying that running or working at a pharmacy school isn't engaging in criminal enterprise. Ugh.
 
I work for a grocery chain. They made it mandatory for us last week in the pharmacy and starting this week, mandatory for the employees on the grocery side too. We have some KN95s/N95s and surgical masks while the grocery employees can use cloth masks or disposable masks. I’m having a really hard time wearing a N95 all day - it irritates my throat and my glasses won’t stay up.

"I don't wear them because I don't find them comfortable. I tried and I can't breath".

There is no ground for the lawsuit or even complaint here since it's not required by law or company policy.

My intention was to get opinions and thoughts on wearing masks even though there is no direct contact with patients. Not for trolls to vomit dog poop.

Some ideas were beneficial, others as usual were just dog poop. Thanks anyways.

Unless they make it federal or state law to do so, i dont think you can force them.

Is it against federal law to wear a 2-piece bathing suit as a pharmacist? No. Can you be fired for what you’re wearing if that’s what you chose to dress in? Yes.

At this point in my life - if I showed up in a speedo to work it would cause serious issues. Maybe when I was 20 years old again it may fly for a day or two.

If I showed up in a 2 piece bathing suit I’m sure it would cause an even more serious problem resulting in a possible short term stay in the local state hospital.

Unfortunately I let my thigh gap go a long time ago....

Did anything actually happen other than some attention-seeking harpy breeder blasting his name on Facebook? License still clear. FFS the script was transferred out to another Walgreens

As for requiring masks these companies should actually be providing them then (Wags, CVS, Walmart, RAD etc)

I don’t know if he still works for Wags but we all know employers always google an applicant name.

Not only that, but this is what he will be remembered as....it doesn’t matter what he has accomplished in life.

Im where the buck stops so, no i aint gonna be no snowflake b!tc# that bends over for every Karen that makes complaints and wants to talk to the manager.

I am using my head. As I said before, we have a front counter that is far from fill counter. Front counter is covered top to bottom with plastic cover. We dont directly hand anything. We are using baskets to exchange cards/money/prescriptions. All my front counter personnel are wearing gloves and sterilizing everything with alcohol. I did not make masks mandatory for this reason. Gave them an option to wear if they want to.

Again, unless they make it federal or state law, if your pharmacy is doing everything you can to put up a barrier, i really dont see the point of wearing a mask ALL the time.

Don’t think it is just the customer. A tech with an axe to grind can take a picture or record a video. It is then we will find out how tough you really are.
 
If a tech is recording a video or photo that is violating company policy at any chain and that tech is subject to termination.

You are talking about a $10-15/hr job. Chains are also not going to fire a tech for "exposing" a pharmacist.

Pharmacy is generally a ****e career too so you theoretically are going to be known for some dip**** Karen complaint that no one will remember in 50 years... can't say I care

It would be against the company policy however..

The notion that pharmacist’s career will be over after a complaint for not wearing a mask is laughable..

I gave them an option to wear. Didnt make it mandatory. All my techs are actually really appreciative of me doing it. Techs at the other pharmacy (we have multiple pharmacies) is complaining about how their pic made them wear it the entire time they’re working.

I aint gonna be scared of a disgruntled tech. I dont have one like that but if someone is vindictive enough to do something stupid like that, well come on bring it on. Lol. I run my pharmacy the right way and we abide by the law. Wearing a mask at all time aint a law so i couldnt careless lol
