I want to know where I stand on my chances on applying to Medical School (MD, DO, Caribbean) and Dental School as well.

I applied two years ago to Ross University with a 3.0 GPA, 2.80 sGPA, 24 MCAT and did not get in.

I had started my undergrad with a 2.63 average in the first two years, and raised it to a 3.0 in time for Ross, I than spent a year, getting perfect grades in 50 credits (many upper level biology) and raised my GPA to a 3.30 and 3.10 science.

I am now attending a masters of biomedical sciences program at Barry University, and have a 3.40 graduate GPA. I also retook the MCAT and got a 29, and I also got a 20 on the DAT.

I know my undergrad GPA is still low, but my graduate GPA is considered high. The problem is that I will not have the Master's degree in time for the June 2011 application process and they wont see that I have a masters degree yet.

What are my chances at MD schools with a 3.30 undergrad (3.10 science), 3.40 grad GPA, 28 MCAT?

What about DO? Considering my retaken pre-reqs. My undergrad GPA would be about 3.40 (3.30 science) and a 3.40 grad GPA.

What about Dental schools with 3.30 overall undergrad GPA, 3.10 science undergrad GPA, 3.40 grad GPA20 DAT?

Thanks

First, I recommend you to complete your Master's Degree. You completed the classes (not to mention paid the tuition) and considering that you're almost done you would be far better off getting the degree (plus some schools won't consider your graduate gpa if you haven't finished getting your degree).

Second although your gpas have improved (great job on the your graduate gpa) the fact that your mcat is still low for MD schools, I would suggest you to apply for DO schools. Don't consider carribean. You're strong for a DO 👍 (but consider this path after you have finished getting your degree!)

I don't know anything about dental schools but others might give you insight. But go with DO in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply,

I fully understand that I should finish my Master's program.

I want to know if I should apply this coming June 2011 for the 2012 cycle because I will graduate from my masters in April 2012, or should I graduate and then apply in June 2012 for the 2013 cycle.

I was in this same situation last year. I'm finishing my master's degree in June 2011. I applied last year, but did not get in anywhere.

On my application my coursework was on there and the program gave me a lot to talk about during interviews.

Like you I'm doing the master's because my undergrad sGPA was low. It seems like you're on the right track now!

I'd apply this coming June if I were you. On the AMCAS application it will say your master's degree is in progress and your expected graduation will be in April. IMO you don't have to finish before you apply.

Good luck!

Barry's degree is best for those in the region that recognize the program (Nova, PCOM-GA, LECOM-B) so your best bet imo would be those particular schools at least for osteopathic. Dental schools are generally not very friendly towards lower GPA but Barry grads have had success in the past in reapplying after stellar success there.

To be honest, it doesn't look favorable whatsoever for M.D. as your MCAT is outside the competitive range and if you take the averaged out GPA, that is also outside the lower range for competitive applications. If you were hellbent on going allopathic, I would submit to some of the lower tier schools in your region but apply mainly to osteopathic schools (those I mentioned above) as well as a few dental schools through AASDAS. Just make sure to get in your applications early.

I'd also try and make up your mind on which route (dental or medical) you wish to take and focus on obtaining as many quality LORs as possible that will attest to your new success. Building up your CV might not be a bad idea either.

Hey,

I don't think you have a chance at a MD school. I have walked a similar path (but with better grades and MCAT) and it took me forever to get into a MD school. I got into a DO school two years before a MD school. Dental school is also very hard to get into, too.
