Masters students please post

I was just curious how many people on this forum are Masters students. If you are, please post:

1) Your Master's Program.
2) What university you are attending.
3) What motivations (if any) you had doing a Masters degree as a premed.

My motivation for doing my degree was to erase (somewhat) my undergrad as well as to mature and learn about research in science and medicine. My hat goes off to people that pursue a Masters or Phd and then decide to go MD, its a lot of school work before entering 6 years of medicine.

Medical Microbiology

I love Micro and apart from that (and more importantly) I need to prove something I didn't quite prove in undergrad. Also, I want to at least have a decent/real background in clinical research. It is a lot of schooling but I think in the end you'll have an edge that other physicians won't quite have. In med school I hope to do a joint MD/MPH. I'm one for torture can't you tell...Seems like i'll be in school forever...

MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mississippi State University. Got the masters because at the time I wasn't aware that the medical field was the perfect match for me. Don't regret it a bit... things finally "clicked" when taking some of the 8000 level engineering courses. Not just engineering, but everything. Fluids, Electricity, Mechanics... all the same thing really. Applies equally well to man made machines or biological systems. And at a deeper level the physics and math is universal to everything and grad school is when I finally was able to see these relationships among seemingly unrelated systems.

Right now, I am in a graduate program with no degree intended. But my plan is do molecular biology or genetics. I am not so sure though. I am a bit more philosophical, and more I like to know at what point life begins. I will see if I intend to declare my degree as I go along. i would prefer to be MD rahter, that's my ultimate dream. 🙂

2) Queen's U
3) I was torn between epi and medicine, applied to both but didn't get into meds (an MCAT issue, which is now fixed) which made saying yes to epi that much easier 😀 . I think a weak point in my application was the lack of research and I am excited to be doing hands on research in my field. Furthermore, I think epi can have an important role in medicine, especially in the clinical setting. So if I do get into med school, I will be able to use my epi knowledge in clincal research, which is where I hope to end up.

Queen's is a good university with a great medical school. Good to see at least one of MSc student had an issue with the MCAT, mine still awaits to be resolved, even if I do get into med school I think I will write it again in April for spite, as if that MCAT thinks it can beat the likes of me.

2. School out in the midwest🙂
3. Public Health is a huge part of the medicine, and I hope to use that knowledge as a future physican.

3. i liked bacterial pathogenesis research so i tried the masters. realized that medicine was a better fit for me than research so now i'm applying for school...

3) 2 reasons: To be competitive for MD/PhD programs (it worked) and to have a solid "fall back" (it DEFINITELY works).

MS in science degree recipients are highly sought after by big pharma! 👍
