Hi, are the stats available for the 2008 matched in terms of matched/unmatched/% of US seniors matching? just wondering b/c the urology match had 158 people unmatched (404 submitted rank lists, and 246 matched). this seems excessively high! are the numbers similar for ophtho?

the statistics have not yet been posted on the sf match site for this year.

they're not exactly the most punctual people, and they still like to use things like fax machines and pdfs and the u s postal service so i'd give them a little more time.

so today i received in the mail from the sf match a letter telling me that i matched (i heart sf match 😛)

in the letter it says "You may be interested in the enclosed statistics."

now i did not get any "enclosed statistics" in my letter, perhaps i am just not special enough.

however, this idea that the statistics do in fact exist prompted me to take another gander at the sf match ophthalmology site.

behold, a miracle. statistics.

cheers

Did anyone notice, looking at that stat sheet, that at the very bottom where it gives the % of US seniors that matched, in says only 62% of US Seniors matched in 2008. This is compared to 89% in 07', and high 80's% in years past. Anyone think its a typo, and they meant to put 92% of US Seniors matched? 62% is ridiculously low.

I think what the stat (in the past) means/meant is that of those matched 89% of them were US Seniors. that was my interpretation, but I may be wrong.

anyone else?

i think they just changed the math.
i think it means - of the total 71% total that matched 62 of those points go to us seniors. this represents 87% of the points (which is how all the other columns are done) if you want to check it you can do the math.

that is only down by 2 points from the year before.

if you want to look at it the other way, last year's match rate was 69%. of those 69 percentage points about 61 (89 %) of them would go to us seniors.

however if you look at the rest of the column for this year, the numbers don't add up (based on the first point i made). i think maybe the img/us grad numbers were done the way they were in previous years (6% and 9% of the total 71 percentage points, equal to about 4 and 6 points respectively toward the total number of points). that seems to add up. but doesn't really make sense. the statistic should be the same throughout the column.

whatever - i still stick to my main point, its not a typo its math.

procrastination at its finest.
