What would you want most as a match day gift going into residency?

And no, I can’t pay off your loans.

Nothing. I don't celebrate my birthday, Christmas. Never cared for gifts.

But gun to my head, this Movado is serviceable:

What's the obsession with fancy watches on SDN?

There's no default 'good gift' for matching. You give good gifts by knowing the person you're gifting to, and what they like. We can't help with that.

a nice fitbit watch, with HR monitor and gps

I agree. Maybe something like the Apple Watch with cellular would be a great gift also. I think noice cancelling headphones or wireless headphones to workout with would be a great gift too.

There's not a universally useful gift, like how a stethoscope is useful for pretty much any med student and plays into the excitement of 'I'm going to be a doctor!' Each specialty and location is going to have different needs, and at some point you get individualized enough that you're right back to 'what would this person like?' That's what I was trying to say earlier...not that you asked a bad question, but that unfortunately, there's not a good answer here.
