Good luck to all of you. May you all match your 1st choices.

May all of you who deserve it match your first choices. ;)

I got my first Choice, University of Michigan here i come.

also matched with #1 choice... UMDNJ! Congrats to everyone!

Thats great. Good luck to everyone else who is applying also. Three more years and hopefully Ill get the same good news.

Congratulations to all!

To my surprise, according to MATCH there are more OMFS positions offered this year (187) than last year (176). As expected though, more applicants participated in OMFS match this year (317) than last year (305). Only 5 positions did not match out of 187 (182 matched). For those of you have access to the "available" position from MATCH's website, where are these 5 unmatched positions? Don't tell me it's Harvard again!?

Out of 317 OMFS applicants participated in MATCH, 297 only applied to OMFS while 20 applied to OMFS and along other residencies.

Out of 182 that have matched, only 8 matched are graduates of Non-US dental schools (179 are US dental graduates). As you can see, it's pretty difficult for international students to get into an US OMFS program based on this statistic.

Also, out of 182 that have matched, 130 of them are from the Class of 2005 (first time applicant) and 52 of them are from graduates before the Class of 2005 (perhaps reapplicants, foreign dentists, GPR people, OMFS internship people, etc.).

More numbers and more detail, visit:

http://www.natmatch.com/dentres/matres.htm

then click on STATISTICS

Some side notes:

Only 2 Nova seniors (Class of 2005) applied to OMFS and both of them matched (1 at Shands Jacksonville, FL and 1 at Metro Health in Ohio)

Two matched here at Nova OMFS: 1 from Michigan (a year of internship) and 1 from Kentucky (a year of GPR). Both of these guys are from the Class of 2004, I believe.

I would call the programs directly and see what it is exactly that they want.

Does anyone know where the 5 unmatched pedo spots are at? Thanks and congrats to all!

wow, pedo seems pretty competitive..

Oh it is. Spots can be VERY difficult to come by (95+ needed on Part I, plus top 10% class rank).

I agree with the first part there Gavin, but the last half in parathesis is crap. Where did you ever hear or see that stat and can you honestly back it up? No need to spread things like that around, yeah pedo may be getting to be very difficult, but 95+ and top 10% to get a spot, I doubt it. I will talk to the 3 people I know at school that applied tomorrow and tell you where they are off to and where they stood in the class.

Rolling acceptance as interviews are conducted. Some acceptances are even given within a day or two of the interview, and programs often want a yes/no to you attending there within a couple of days. So it can be rewarding (to find out before a match deadline), but can be a bit of a risk if you get interviewed and in somewhere that's your #2 or 3 school, and the interview at #1 isn't for a month.

7 of 7 pedo applicants from san antonio matched this year!
2 at san antonio, 2 at ohio state, 1 baylor, 1 columbia, 1 NYU
and only like one of them is the "top ten and 90+ on boards"-type. pedo is much more about personality and externships, etc.
im impressed with my own class right now: 4 ortho, 2 endo, 7 pedo, 10-15 in AEGD&GPRs, and 2 oms - only one unmatched applicant in all, not too bad!

I think my class did decent........

Pediatric: 6 for 6
Perio: 1 for 1
Endo: 1 for 1
Prostho: 3 for 3
Ortho: 7 for 13 (a 97 didnt match)
Oms: 8 for 12 (a 98 and a 96 did not match!!!)

Everyone except 2 people has 90+ on boards.
26 students becoming specialists out of a class of 80.......pretty good, imho. :D

Hey Doggie,
That's pretty good for Columbia.
Can you let us know where they matched to? Thanks for the info!

Last month, someone from Columbia's senior class posted that 25 people were applying for ortho this year from Columbia.

Also, ortho and OMS are the big specialty players and Im sorry to say but those stats from Columbia are average, but not at all amazing. I thought Columbia was supposed to be the specializtion school??? I guess that guy with a 97 who didnt match into ortho is kicking himself in the ass.....That guy couldve probably been #1 at many other schools.

A good example to show that although Gavin posts on this site in a cocky manner like he knows it all, he really doesnt.

ANy word from those applicants?? I talked with a senior today and he told me that he knows that 2 of the girls from Temple matched.

Competition is just tough guys. That's all it is. Peds is getting harder and harder...you should definitely get 90+ if you want to go for it. So gotta pay attention now and stop dreaming of vacation during lectures.

Peds is definitely getting tougher but 90+ on the boards is not necessary....like a previous poster said, much of it has to do with personality, externships and only DECENT grades and board scores and this has also been told to me by the pedo faculty at my school. Grades are def important, but nothing compared to Endo/Ortho/OMS.

And I assume you wanan do ortho...WOW...join the 5000 other dental students that also wanna do ortho....good luck with those odds.

Anyways loser, you continue to lose your hair and Ill continue to dream about vacation during lecture, cause to me there is more to life than just dental school....

Did you match? You got a 98 didn't you? Let us know.

i found out today that the unmatched OMS position at Henry Ford was a mistake... The school was considering to match three residents but during the interview said that they may only match two. I found out that they deliberately matched two and are currently considering getting an intern

Luckily, I did match......but it's gonna be my little secret as to where I matched....haha..... I'm not giving away my identity that easily. :D

Doggie,
Could u tell us if it's a 4 yr or 6 yr program and what your class rank and extracurriculars were in general? Thanks.

BadVibes---you definitely don't know much about getting into a specialty. But being a D1 its understandable. It would be wise to investigate a little more thoroughly before making rash generalizations. 90+ is not necessarily needed for any specialty ortho, omfs, endo, or pedo----I know people in each field that had sub-90 and matched. The point is specialties are difficult and peds in the last 3 years has been ultra competitive. Peds is the 3rd highest paying specialty only behind omfs and endo, ahead of ortho----there is a major influx unfortunately due to this fact. (See the new ADA 2002 income survey.) Point is if you want to get an interview and be competitive (outside of your own school) you're going need a 90+ in the above specialties to get recognized and a foot in the interview door. There are always exceptions to the rule.

Your right, Im a D1 and I dont know anything about getting in....but what makes you know more than me??? My posts have come from talking to peds faculty at my school, current pedo residents, practicing pediatric dentists and senior dental students interested in pedo and NONE of them have said that having 90+ board scores is a necessity outside of your own school. Of course it doesnt hurt, but one thing that they ALL told me was that stuff like externships, personality (i.e. interview), and community work are all HIGHLY considered, moreso than in ortho/endo/OMS. The latter are more academic/research based in their acceptances, whereas pedo is not as much.

Also, I understand that pedo residencies vary in their difficulty for admission, but Im talking more on general terms.

Remember, I never downplayed the importance of grades and board scores, but people on this board have been stating inflated stats than from what Ive been told by actual people within the pedo field.

sheesh, another thread goin' in the crapper.
Can't we just let people talk about where they matched without all the side garbage?

BadVibes
Let it go man and concentrate on getting through anatomy and neuro this semester. Pay attention and things will stick and cut down on your board prep time and you can relax. The 2 girls did match here in Philly and one did not, but I think she only applied to one program, so she either wasn't too interested or thought she was a shoein. Anyway, my advice to you is stay active and when you get to clinic ask the director for any cases that are tough or challenging and show you can work with kids. We have a case now in clinic I am going to work on once the senior graduates with a kid with A.I. (Amelogenesis Imperfecta) basically his teeth are all ground down to the gingiva and he is 13, mind you these are his adult teeth. Should be interesting
I'm Out

Doggie, my chair partner, got into a 6 year program, obviously. And i'm the 1 guy doing endo next year.

I think our stats were solid! Most students opted for a year of GPR to get more experience and time to decide what they'd like to do. Most are good candidates for specialty.

Thanks Endoguy,
do you have any info on where the ortho and peds are headed to?

ya....as endoguy has said, I will be going into a 6yr program.

Columbia is unique in that the students are not ranked per se.

Also....dont mind badvibe's comment about not needing good grades even for your own school. Grades are necessary for you to get through the door, but i think personality and how you interact with people will keep you in the door.
