Match list 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MN had a hard winter, and today they had a tornado... WTF...
I'm hoping to do a couple rotations back there so I can stay with my family...

Congrats to all those who matched, and let's hope that the DO discrimination is lessened in the future. It certainly happens in Denver

I should publish a study about how board scores directly correlate with how interesting you find this
skin-cancer-carcinoma-400x400.jpg
Well I may as well give up now then. I'll likely fail boards if this is accurate.

To me, that integrated vascular surgery residency is pretty darn impressive.

Has anyone gotten access to DMU's match list yet?

How long does it normally take for schools to put up new match lists?

radiology and anesthesiology are not that competitive anymore, but IMO any allo EM, NS, or upper tier IM, and I guess ophtho match is impressive. Not sure if Yale or GT's programs are considered "upper tier", but must be solid programs.

its crazy how just a few years ago, a DO was lucky to match even a community ACGME rads program. Today? 81 unfilled Rads spots in the match
So your saying a Hopkins or upper tier anesthesia placement is not as impressive as a random EM residency... Sorry but going to have to disagree. those upper teir programs still have rediculously high standards

Elizabeth, in response to your post, the Yale was not a satellite campus from NYCOM, it was the main one, as was columbia presbyterian/cornell EM from NYCOM. If you goto the columbia presby EM program website they have classes 2007 to 2017 there which is 11 years and they have neither taken a DO or an IMG ever in those 11 years. There was also a Harvard anesthesiology from NYCOM, a Columbia/Cornell Rehab, 2 Georgetown EM matches, a Cornell and LIJ Opthalmology and these are just people that I know personally. I think with the merger and comparable board scores, the ACGME world is finally opening up their eyes to the candidate themselves instead of a few letters after their name.

I find it interesting these hospitals are willing to take DOs now due to the merger. I say it because DO school curriculum hasn't changed or anything, so why would the hospitals be more open minded about candidates if the merger is for residencies

I mentioned this somewhere else, but I had heard of DOs being flat out told by PDs that they would pick them if they were MDs, but their excuse was that since they are an ACGME residency they need to look out for MDs first and foremost, especially since DO residencies weren't open to MDs the way MD residencies were open to DOs. I never thought it really was a widespread idea (and really just thought it was an excuse), but maybe a lot of PDs actually felt that way.

To be completely fair and neutral, I understand where these PD's come from. AOA was all about keeping their residencies exclusive but at the same time wanted to take and take from ACGME. To me it's a double standard.

If the AOA wants more collaboration with ACGME programs, they need to be willing to open their side of the doors too--since that would encompass true teamwork. Yes the whole OMM training etc etc. that MD's don't have, kept being said as a reason---but to me its a cheap excuse. If AOA truly and legitimately wanted equal collaboration it would've found a way for MD's to apply to AOA programs without being forced to do so as a response to the ACGME fellowship restrictions (even though I know there's more confidential reasons why the merger took place).

But all this is in the past, I'm glad PD's are opening more doors. I'm matriculating at a good time lol.

I've been saying this for a while now. The ACGME had no duty to DO grads previously, but now they do as they are our official GME institution. I fully expect things to change for the better at a rapid pace.

How do you feel about lets say NYU Internal Med. In their FAQ they clearly say "We are sorry, but we do not accept Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine graduates." Do you think this will hold place past 2020?

I'm not sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see things like that disappear by ACGME requirement; but that doesn't mean those places will suddenly become less competitive.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion, but I think the general trend will be for that to happen. I don't think any of us can predict exactly what individual programs will do and when. But even if there never is an ACGME requirement like SLC mentions, if places like Harvard and JHU and WashU start taking more DOs, then NYU not taking them is going to look awfully stupid.

even after this merger agreement, the timeline and requirements (OMM class?) for MD students getting access to DO residencies still seems uncertain. guess it will probably will be class of 2016 at the soonest, but possibly as late as c/o 2021.

It shall be very interesting to see how all of this plays out...

Has anyone gotten access to DMU's match list yet?

It historically takes DMU a while (6+ months) to post the match list to their website for some reason

5 Urology matches. Nice!

The UC Davis EM matches are sweet too!

I haven't seen it yet, but if you are an accepted student you'll get it in your email when it's released.
Awesome. I keep checking the website but no luck. I'll just wait for the email

I don't want to be negative to my colleagues, but it seems SOMA's only strong matches were 1 ophthalmology and 1 neurosurgery. Something to consider if you'll attend this institution.

I'd wait till the entire list is out before making that assessment. Sounds like there was an ortho match and several more ACGME EM matches that weren't included. Nonetheless, I think the med/peds match at USC and radiology match at UofA are impressive. Match lists are so subjective anyways. You'll always see great matches at any school. Its really up to the individual to succeed.

Can you intimate why this is something one should consider? At least more than say, perceived fit with the school, desire to live in the area, or any of the infinite amount of things that are more important.

People are generally very selective about the places they even apply to. None of the places I'm looking at would likely be considered "top" programs. But they're all good, will give me what I want/need, and will make my wife and kids happy in terms of location. My choice of places is governed by many factors, only one of which is the perceived prestige of the program.

To me, if I get into one of those programs, it will be a "good" match.

You are being negative. I think when it comes to most DO programs, if you are relying on your program to help you match, especially into a competitive acgme program, you're just being delusional. The DO applicants who match into competitive acgme programs/specialties are self-motivated and essentially achieve what they do on their own accord with minimal assistance from their schools.

Also it's completely unfair to only consider matches into specialties that are traditionally more difficult to match into as "strong" matches. Perhaps that particular class did not have a strong interest in those specific specialties. Not everybody wants optho, ent, urology, Derm, ortho or ns. Also in the match, location, lifestyle factors are starting to play a larger role than program reputation in the selection process. Essentially, all you're doing with your words is undermining the work of a vast majority of DOs who match acgme. Don't be an ignoramus.

Bottom line is this, and this is more for the pre-meds considering DO school/DO underclassmen than the previous poster: in most cases, getting into a competitive acgme institution/specialty is,
for the most part, going to be your responsibility alone. And don't be ashamed if you're truly interested in fm, peds, IM. I have classmates who are absolutely brilliant who matched into these specialties.

I speak from my own experience as a 4th year coming from one of the newer DO programs that had some "strong" matches.

It depends on your standards of what a good match is.

I think it's obvious your school can have influence on where you can go to residency. If not, every match would be equal. My point is that if you have options, SOMA doesn't seem a strong choice for competitive residencies.

I'm wondering why you're so hung up on "competitive residencies" as an indicator of school quality. As mentioned previously, not everyone wants to deal with Derm or ENT. I tell you even if I make AOA/SSP and get a 260+ I'm still not going for any of those specialties and plenty share my opinion.

And for what it's worth, it's not every DO school that has Optho and/or Neurosurgery on their match lists.

The fact that a student was able to match there, given that the name of the DO school can count in the director's ranking, speaks well of the school itself. Just saying.

I guess it was coincidence that CCOM, TouroCA and Western had more self-motivated students than LECOM or SOMA in nearly every category.

You are the guys saying I'm focusing just on specialties. Many of the other matches were at low level programs. Look, you like what you see in the list, good for you. It doesn't change my mind.

Can you please provide specific examples of what you've seen in CCOM Touro and western that you feel beats LECOM and soma out of the water in all categories?

I didn't say all categories. And yes, I could give you examples such as anesthesia at Washington and Colorado, Neurology at Mayo, surgery at UCLA, pediatrics at Stanford, etc. I'm not going to make a comprehensive list because you can do your own homework.
