explain?
I heard there were almost 500 Gen Surg spots in the SOAP, although I'm not certain of how many of those were prelims.

Thanks! 15 matches were Harvard affiliations, and excluding a few military, ~90% are mid-top tier academicsOh my gosh!!! Your efforts are so so so appreciated.

As a PSA to anyone using these to compare schools, please take them with a grain of salt. These list fluctuate year to year based on students interests. For example, Baylor matched 11 to urology and 13 to orthopedics last year, whereas those numbers went down this year while there was an increase in internal medicine and other fields. Every year is different!
There were only two categorical G Surg positions in the SOAP.I heard there were almost 500 Gen Surg spots in the SOAP, although I'm not certain of how many of those were prelims.
Baylor College of Medicine 2016 Match table above.
God forbid we attend baylor. We'll be stuck doing primary care in the middle of nowhere...
That's not my point and I think you know that. Our IM matches are fabulous and same goes for other primary care fields such as Peds. My point is that pre-meds, including myself when I was applying, may direct their focus on a single year's matches to the "competitive" specialities and not realize these can fluctuate year to year.
You bring up a good point though. The most weight could be put on the quality of IM/Peds matches, if a schools sends a lot into those fields. Greater and more consistent n value with those.
