Match List 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just because you think that doesn't make it true. There are decreased US MD seniors applying. There were 100+ open spots after the match a few years ago. Programs have compensated, changed their interview thresholds in order to fill which means more DOs.

No, no they're breaking the glass ceiling, rah rah, do = md+holisticism

Not too long ago foreign medical graduates were preferred over DOs.

It sounds like DO students dislike DO success.

Last time I visited this well-respected hospital, I saw a DO with his own parking spot on the first floor. The glass ceiling has been shattered brah, better grab an umbrella

CCOM has gone down the tubes these past few years. CCOM had the highest LizzyM average (do pre-meds still use LizzyM?), is located a few subway stops away from some of the largest medical research centers in the country, has 100% ward based rotations, highest tuition in the country, class size of 200 students.... [ I can go on and on]. Best matches are UIL Chicago EM which is in Cook County, Neurosurg at PCOM, UMass IM, RadOnc at CCF, and Peds at UCLA. The St. James Uro and St. James Ortho has a contract with CCOM where they interview CCOM students which is a given. The Ortho program at Larkin won't pass ACGME accreditation and everyone in the field knows it. The Detroit/WSU surgery match is a prelim position. Overall for such a large class with access to soo many Chicago resources, this list is very mediocre.

Do you think this is an anomaly this year? Why do you think it is this way?

The real problem with DR is that the raw number of students interested hasn't really changed, but a few years ago 100 spots got added. That was around when the 81 unmatched spots happened, and they've been staying around that since. The demand seems the same, but the supply of residencies is just more than it was.

Very underwhelming overall. Expected so much more from the caliber of matriculant, location, and cost. I'd take WesternU's, RVU's, and AZCOM's 2016 match lists for my students ANYDAY.

For a second there I really thought that psychiatry match was at UCSF (fresno program is at a different hospital), since they already have two DOs from touro. I really believed touro was turning into a feeder school for their psychiatry program LOL.

The match that really impressed me the most, not looking at the ultra competitive residency matches, was the pathology match at Standford. Based on the pathology sub forums, this is a top tier match.

Yeah that Stanford one is great. I think there was another DO program that placed there as well. Would be interesting to see how their CVs were coming into the match.

That thoracic surgery match tho. Good for them!

Do you think this is an anomaly this year? Why do you think it is this way?
Honestly, I don't know. I can guess but guesses don't mean anything.
I'm from Chicago and, unfortunately, didn't get into CCOM 3 years ago. However, often times, at my current DO school, I find myself saying, "I bet I wouldn't have this problem if I got into CCOM," such as access to research centers, relationships to other medical schools, top-notch teaching hospitals, faculty with NIH funds, all amenities CCOM has had longer than I have been alive. It's just odd to see a DO school have so many resources with top caliber students and faculty, but not have students place in competitive programs, particularly in the past few years since I've been a student doctor. I could elaborate further but don't want to ruffle up people's feathers. Don't get me wrong, I love CCOM and truly believe the school has more resources for students than any other program in the country. It's just odd not to see students place in more research heavy, competitive programs.

Yeah that's an awesome match. Wish I knew who he/she was. Would love to know how he/she set himself/herself apart for such a competitive program.
how dare you

it's he/she/zie/sie/xe/ey/ve/tey/em
and himself/herself/zieself/hirself/eirself/verself/terself/emself

Honestly, there may be several factors. Personally, it's possibly the curriculum that teaches a lot of non-boards superfluous information rather than sticking to what will help everyone do well on boards (eg. 5 or 6 months of anatomy). [Honestly, it'd make it a lot easier if schools taught out of board-style review books for the first two years...]. CCOM still uses a traditional medical education approach rather than systems/symptoms-based. Additionally, it's a lot of little things like way too many exams vs. other schools, multitude of quizzes, mandatory events, etc. that create a constant interruption to the flow, although they've done some improvements (a few, such as finally recording very few of their lecturers online) by listening to students' suggestions but it only helps for the next class or often beyond (way too late). As well, though some rotations are amazing it is equally and possibly outbalanced by the multitude of crappy rotation sites, so as a student you may be one of the lucky ones who lands an amazing site for eg. pediatrics, while your classmate ends up in an awful location; basically, many students sacrifice their rotations in one specialty for the few in that same one who end up with the awesome site. Or maybe it's the type/caliber of students they select? I'm not really sure.

overall, the "established" private DO schools (PCOM, CCOM, DMU etc) seem overrated and underwhelming in terms of quality. No school is perfect, but I feel like the extent of issues and complaints (and not just minor ones) I have read over the years from these schools shouldn't be present given how long these programs have had to "establish" themselves.

A DO school is a DO school is a DO school. Prior to 2000 most of these old private schools were way rougher than new schools are now. The truth is that DO school quality and requirements have increased significantly over time. Stil a ways to go, but at least moving in the right direction for the most part.

I go to AZCOM, and I think the pre-clinical curriculum is basically the same as CCOM. I agree on a lot of the above. Anatomy was over the top. In MWU's defense, however, I kind of liked the frequent, fewer tests. I'm a natural procrastinator, so the testing schedule kept me on my toes. I honestly can't imagine having to study for block exams. I wouldn't have done well, but that's just me.

From hearing from some alums when I describe the types of problems DO schools have, they tend to talk about much worse things with regards to rotations and just academic support in general.

A year or so ago, I also stumbled upon some forum posts (not SDN), petitions, legal docs (don't remember how and I don't even think I could find them again if I tried), from the late 1990s to early 2000s relating to PCOM, CCOM, and KCOM. Everybody knows about huge issues with LECOM when it first opened, but to be honest this stuff sounded really bad also and I was surprised to see it at aruably some of the best DO schools at the time. Most of it from what I remember was mainly about limited resources (both in terms of space, advising, and crazy high professor turnover), mistreatment of students (like randomly dismissing, failing, or otherwise screwing over a surprisingly large population of students), and major issues with rotations.

To be honest, the more I hear, the more I get the impression that DO schools had much less oversight then than they do now. Again, still a ways to go, especially for clinical rotations, but better than they were.

Also keep in mind that, at this point, SGU had a higher US matriculate average MCAT than DO schools. You're absolutely right that schools are going in the right direction in terms of oversight/assessment but, now, because of growth, quality assurance in clinical education is thinning out.

To be honest, the more I hear, the more I get the impression that DO schools had much less oversight then than they do now. Again, still a ways to go, especially for clinical rotations, but better than they were.
That is true. I can't understand how COCA/AOA could have tolerated such poor conditions in their schools for decades and decades.

Very underwhelming overall. Expected so much more from the caliber of matriculant, location, and cost. I'd take WesternU's, RVU's, and AZCOM's 2016 match lists for my students ANYDAY.

Agreed, especially considering TUCOM-CA's past few years' match lists have been much stronger.

I think a huge confounder is the fact that the majority of students who attend TUCOM-CA are California bred-and-buttered (or west coast, at least), and are 100% convicted to stay in California, or as close as possible. Hence, they choose community-based programs on the west coast instead of branching out to more prestigious, academic programs elsewhere.

That's been my experience with the school, at least--it's a very self-selecting, geographically-limiting student body.

It's interesting that you feel like you have such a grasp on how to gauge match list as a third year med student, much less know that these students all got rejected from more "competitive" programs

It's rather odd, neither Cedars-Sinai's anesthesiology residency program nor the University of Chicago's IM residency program have RVU graduates listed as current residents on their websites.

The ACGME match in orthopedic surgery at McLaren is present, however. I wonder if there is any relation to this McLaren orthopedic alum? ..

I think at some point I heard that the chicago match was actually northshore. I don't know anything about the ortho resident's family, but even if they were related, would they really give somebody one of their 3 residency spots because their uncle was a resident there decades ago?

The UChicago incident happens ALL the time for DO matches, its never UChicago MC and always northshore. Very misleading.

That reminds me...that DO that supposedly matched at UPenn IM would be a second or third year now right? The program finally has their residents listed on the website and there aren't any DOs. Not surprised that one was also a fake. That person probably matched at Pennsylvania hospital. EDIT: or the match was a prelim.

PS: plenty of residents from low tier US MD schools including one from Puerto Rico....just FYI for @Goro

I've pretty thoroughly gone through match lists and I can't remember this match. I don't think a DO ever supposedly matched this program, if they did it would be probably the best IM match a DO has had. A DO did match the integrated plastics program from PCOM. Honestly probably the greatest DO match to date.

I really like what you have to say on a lot of things but sometimes you become very condescending and inflammatory, especially seeing as many of us will be your future colleagues. I think your info is good but your delivery is poor. I highly doubt any school openly lies on their match lists like you seem to be implying with the bolded. Often it is uneducated secretaries that put together the match lists and they have no idea what a program is. I agree they should have someone who knows look over it but to imply that schools intentionally try to deceive everyone is a little dramatic.

This never actually ended up on any match list but was an unsubstantiated rumor that people just blindly started throwing around as fact. UPenn is even on the list of DO friendly IM programs as a result of this rumor. Here is one example of this:

http://www-forums.studentdoctor.net/index.php?posts/16359478/

So I'm not accusing any school of perpetuating this lie. It's a product of DO match lists being passed down through a game of telephone to gullible students (and PhD faculty members) on sdn who are inclined to believe anything they hear which will reinforce their preconceived notion that the "glass ceiling is shattering".

Maybe a DO student should sue one of these elitist PD as an attempt to put an end to the discrimination that DO students face :p

As long as ya'll bumped up this thread, that ^^ RVU match list missed one student's match which was in Neurosurgery at Virginia Tech's Carillion Clinic. Probably going to be one of the last DOs to match there as this is a program that already has ACGME pre-accreditation and, considering its massive research budget, will be a MD/PhD magnet in the years to come.

That's the rub, isn't it? Assuming there is a relation, the situation could be framed in multiple ways, ranging from innocuous to suspect.

So... RVU matched one grad into an osteopathic neurosurgery spot in Roanoke, Virginia, that has filed its initial accreditation paperwork with the ACGME. Forgive me if I keep my panties on.

I think I've seen some allopathic schools play the same game. It still leaves the mystery of the disappearing Cedars-Sinai anesthesiology resident.....

There's too many odd things that occur with these DO match lists. It wasn't until recently that my school started adding the specific site for a UCSF match (Fresno vs SF). I'm all for the admin making these "mistakes" but when you go on their website and they tout that they've matched their grads into UChicago, UCSF, UCLA, And Mt Sinai when in reality none of them were accurate matches in the truest sense then it becomes an outright lie is simply bait for an I expecting prospective applicant to see and throw 100-200 dollars at for a secondary.

Your school actually posts stuff like that? Is it like on the homepage? Granted I don't go on my school's site regularly, but that's almost like carib level advertising. But then again, my school is notorious for its cheesy and at times medically inaccurate ads...

Hahha yep they def had it for the match part and it was pretty unreal they'd do that. But they are changing the website soon so hopefully it stops or becomes...more accurate.

Dang. If my math is correct, that's more than 14 RVU grads going into a categorical surgery program this year.
Why/how do they send so many grads into surgery? It's almost as much as PCOM and KCU despite having a much smaller class size.

Mayo's family med program has a couple DO. Although I don't know exactly how they rank since it's "only" family medicine.
http://www.mayo.edu/mayo-edu-docs/m...ments/family-medicine-residents-minnesota.pdf

There's no real rank when it comes to family medicine program. This ranking is more a result of how well regarded the program is and competitive fellowship matching (family medicine doesn't have competitive fellowships). For family medicine, it is just a matter of whether it is a good program or not. You can check the family medicine forums for this answer.

They selected for that type of personality and they have good USMLE/COMLEX board scores. RVU generally has to possibly all of our surprise proven itself to be one of the superstars of the DO world.

That brave guy going to Columbia for family medicine after it almost got closed

I wonder if the fact that there was such a huge backlash actually made the program more stable. Either that or its just delaying the inevitable and created some admins with axes to grind. Either way, the uncertainty would make me pretty nervous to go though, but some people really want to be in NYC.
