Match List 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You have to have great scores, LOR's and research/pubs to get into top programs in lots of fields that are less competitive. Anesthesia is seemingly becoming one of them. It's not a knock on the field, just the truth, people aren't flocking there like they did even 5 years ago. As a result, lots of places went unfilled this year.

Post the stats. I don't buy anecdotal evidence.

I check the JHU EM program page and I'm trying to figure when Lake Erie all of a sudden became a feeder school for JHU. Nearly every year, they had one DO and all from LECOM.

Then again the alumni page does have several DOs from other schools. Just finding it strange with these DOs only coming from LECOM in the more recent years.

I think using the term "feeder" school is a bit of a stretch.

Post the stats. I don't buy anecdotal evidence.

There were nearly as many unfilled Anesthesia positions as FM positions this year.

Stats should be published soon, I don't have them off hand, but there were over 100 spots in anesthesia during SOAP.

Again, when the stats are available, post. I believe numbers.

Can't fight the truth. It's been a trend for the last 5 years...

It's pretty obvious that you guys DO NOT know how to look at data and percentages. The data provided DOES NOT indicate a significant decline in total number of Anesthesia residency positions offered vs those filled. According to the info provided: 95% of PGY1 Anesthesiology positions were filled, and 92% of PGY2 positions were filled. These percentages are NOT significantly different than those from the past 4 years. Your point in NOT correct.

There was a significantly higher number of SOAP positions in anesthesia this year than there were last year.

That is not supported by the data provided. What is SOAP? (I must be getting old...)

Supplemental offer and acceptance program. A less insane version of what used to be called the scramble.

I'm looking for the post, but in the SOAP week, someone commented on there being over 100 Anesthesia positions available after the main match. The NRMP should release the info soon enough, but all available evidence I've seen indicated Anesthesia is on the decline. It's a very cyclical field from what I gather, this wouldn't be the first time.

BTW, I became interested in medical school thinking I'd be an anesthesiologist, I have nothing but respect for the field.

Hahaha these epic DO matches are causing pure mania

IIRC they only have 2 or 3 DO's, simply a numbers game, not a funnel for Hopkins. LECOM has a ton of students and Hopkins certainly interviewed a ton of DOs this year from all over (ran into 4 different schools on my interview day there). Only a few DO schools on the east coast and a lot of the residents from Hopkins are from east coast schools, and takes a lot for a non-east coaster to come out to Baltimore. I loved the city and both Baltimore programs personally, but not enough to make Hopkins or Maryland in my top 3.

You know just like with anything it's different strokes for different folks. Everyone in med school has different goals. Some want to just get from point A to point B with really no care about prestige or getting into academics. Others want to be intimately involved in academic medicine. Each of these goals have a different pathway and different hoops to jump. I'll be honest, if I had the choice between a solid university program in the midwest vs. a small community program in CA where my family is I'dd have a hard time choosing...but that's my naive mind right now and my decision could change down the road and I'm okay with that.

This is why everything
I think my program would cite similar criteria when judging candidates. Yet we've matched DO's regularly for years.

Fair enough, I'll defer to your opinion since you're way ahead of me in the game.

That said, do you think there are other criteria these pd's aren't being totally truthful about in similar fashion?

see "match lists 2015" or "match lists 2014" or "match lists 2013" or "match lists 2012".

all of these stupid arguments have been made before. all of them.
and I really want to emphasize that these are stupid arguments.

please. for the love of God. can we just post lists and stfu? Why do you idiots do this? NOBODY, and I mean nobody gives a damn how impressed or unimpressed [insert sdn user] is by a match list.

even fewer people care if [insert sdn user2] agrees or disagrees.
Was someone holding a gun to your head making you read the whole thread? If so, get off SDN and call the police.

lol. I like how everyone just wants match lists to appear out of thin air. When they are available, I'm sure they will be posted. Chill.

There is definitely some hilarious discussion in this thread (in a pathetic kind of way), but it's not slowing down the posting of match lists.

yes.

I dont want match lists to appear out of thin air. I want to not have to scroll through pages of m1 drivel to see the match lists that are posted.

If all you want is to look at match lists, try googling for them. I agree that the conversation is pretty inane at this point, but so is complaining about having to sift through discussion on a discussion board.

you are right, who would think that clicking on "match list 2016" would possibly result in seeing the match lists of 2016?

instead, we should make a safe haven for MD/DO/IMG comparison...you know...because there isnt enough of that going on already on SDN.

if you inbreds want to keep that up, you should google search "nearest bridges to jump off of".
If implying people should go kill themselves doesn't get you banned, I don't know what will. Bye bye

It's only UMass, get back to me when a DO makes Derm at Harvard or Yale. 😉

Yeah. It's cold there and I heard from a friend that one of the janitors closets smells like cabbage. Obviously they had to resort to taking some crappy DO because no MD would want to work there.

I guess they found a DO while they were scraping the bottom of the barrel. No surprise.

That is not necessarily true. Maybe the level of research, quality of lectures, and resources available differ, but to say just because it is a highly esteemed top program means you will get better training there compared to other places is way to big of a generalization. The downside of huge academic programs is the increase amount of administrative oversight in addition to a divvying up procedures/patients between the 100 other residents working there vs. maybe a regional medical center where you will have more freedom.

In terms of treating patients, there are plenty of programs where you will see lots of stuff and come out as a competent doctor. I have met plenty of ****ty doctors that trained at "top programs" and plenty of good ones too. It was person dependent.

It really depends on what you want out of this career too.

It matters where you do residency. You are correct in saying that you can get good training at a regional medical center or large community program, but that is not the point bobg504 was trying to make. The point is, by training at a high quality program (however you define it), you are going to see adequate variety, get hands on experience, and learn from seasoned attendings/senior residents who invest in the program. If you go to a program that is too small/low volume, too lopsided with regard to patient mix, has attendings that don't invest in education, or there is a malignant or lackadaisical environment - the end result is going to suffer to some degree. Unfortunately many smaller Osteopathic institutions fit this category. Notice he said 'high quality programs,' not 'top tier academic institutions.' There are pro's and cons to both University and Community programs. 'Top tier' is a relative term depending on what you are looking for in a program, which you alluded to.

Derm at UMASS? Wow! That's awesome!

nah. Derm isn't even competitive anymore. Too over saturated. Its become the new anesthesia and radiology. Soon it will be looked down upon for anybody to match Derm. Mid level encroachment etc etc 😉

Derm is my fallback if I dont get into peds

kind of a dick move to post peoples emails

That wasn't intentional and I didn't realize that the emails on there when I posted as it was on my group's facebook page, and I hadn't scanned the document. It's been caught by the moderator and removed. Not intentional, sorry.

kind of a dick move to post peoples emails
Totally unintentional. I didn't realize the emails were in the file. Someone in my class posted the file on our group webpage and I just passed it along. Luckily the moderator took care of it. Sorry.

Attached is the NSU-COM class of 2016 self-reported match list. It's been edited as I mistakenly posted the file that had identity info included.
the names are still there

Lots of MD schools post names on their websites for their match lists. Not sure why.

the names are still there
Oh man this is bad. They're not showing up on the same document I have in front of me. Maybe because it was saved from a google DOC. I'll refrain from posting from now on as it seems this isn't working out. Thanks for notification.

For rads, was it 2, 2, and 2 at each place? I know you said you weren't listing doubles but some of us on the rads forum are keeping track of matches.

I opened it when it was posted (but then deleted it when I saw it had names because I felt bad)-- sheet 1 was de-identified, but sheet 2 still had the names. If you delete sheet 2, you should be fine.
