Anyone know if you put down a prelim on
your match list, if the NRMP lets you
know that you just got the prelim or
if you got your PGYY-2? I got the match
congratulations thing, but I included
prelim spots at the end of my primary
list. I was trying to match in RadOnc,
so I kinda expect not to match, but I
got the e-mail, so I don't really know?

i think that the email was supposed to tell you if you matched to your preliminary and advanced positions separately.

They will tell you separately if you matched PGY-1 or PGY-2 (i.e. if you only matched one you'll get the email congratulating you for that one instead of just "congratulations, you've been matched").

That being said, it sounds like you ranked some prelim spots on the main match list as well as on the supplementary lists. If this is the case, then you won't know if it's Rad Onc or one of the prelim spots till Thurs.

Good luck!

bc5592,

Congrats, you WILL be in a rad onc residency. Here is an email sent by the NRMP in response to questions regarding putting prelim spots at the end of your primary list. Three people on another forum got this same response:

Here is the exact e-mail I received from the NRMP.

"If you rank advanced programs and prelims on the primary list and prelims on the supplemental list and you match to the advanced and prelim from the supplemental, it will say you are matched. If you match to the advanced only it will say you matched to a advanced or PGY2 position. If you match to just the prelim on the primary list bottom, it will say you matched to a one year position. You will therefore know that you need to scramble for an advanced."

So, if you got an email just saying you matched, you have matched into both a prelim year and advanced position.

Well I must say that I'm thrilled to be wrong in this case. Congrats bcc!

Whisker-did all of us going thru the match this year get this email? I don't remember seeing it.

No, these people emailed the NRMP to ask about it because your question was raised on the other forum several weeks ago. I did not email the NRMP personally so I will not say that this information 100% correct. The fact that three different people posted similar responses makes me believe it 99.9%

Thanks for all the responses. I have been
wondering with a cautious optimism. But, I think
I'll go ahead and get excited now! 😛 I guess I got
in. WooHoo! Hope everyone else is happy too.

Congrats bcc592 that is great to hear. LOL, being from Augusta myself I'm pretty sure I know who you are and that is great. See you on Thursday.
PEACE

Yep, you're in. I can confirm with certainty that there are 4 messages you can see from NRMP. "sorry you didn't match", "congrats you matched" which means you got both a prelim AND advanced position. "congrats you matched into a 1st year spot" and "congrats you matched into an advanced spot".

The only people who wouldn't know that they matched into a certain specialty is if you ranked Rad Onc positions along with categorical (not prelim) med positions or another categorical specialty. If you ranked ONLY rad onc and prelim, trans positions on your primary list you're golden, start celebrating.
