Whats up people. I want to do Emergency Medicine.
Step 1: 186 (damn)
Step 2: 217
Home EM rotation: High Pass
Rest of clinical grades: Pass and High pass mostly, some Honors
The kicker: Im an IMG
My question: I do not care WHERE I match, I have applied to 50 programs up and down the east coast....BUT, should I apply to MORE programs to ensure matching SOMEWHERE?

Thanks guys...love this forum by the way...peace.

apply broad- apply everywhere. if you get into a 3 year spot- it'll go by so fast... not worth sitting out a year because you didn't want to be in some random state. good luck.

I too an am IMG...and am awaiting my step II CK scores.
I will definitely apply to more programs than that, even if I rock CK.
Step I was decent...not great by any means.

I guess the more programs, the more chances for interviews. Why take the chance??

I was a DO applicant, and applied to 40 programs (I think 42 actually). Got about twenty interview offers. I think 50 is a good number. Make sure you get some strong LORs, as they'll make the difference, and rotate at the plcaes you want. A widely cast net is never a bad thing.

Dr. Quinn,
Did you have to do an internship before applying to USF as a DO. I am an MS IV at WVSOM and am wondering if I should even apply to any programs in the "5" states. My boards are below average but have strong experience, strong LOR's(one from a program director) and great EM grades on clinicals. Do you still think I should apply to 50 programs or do you think 30 might suffice? Also, I am from Florida, what is the thought about interviews coming from USF with what I described above?

Thanks for any feedback from anyone

WVSOM MS IV #56

You can always start turning down interviews if you get >20 invites, but if you've only had 5 interviews in February, I can guarantee that you're going to regret not applying to more programs from the get-go.

Lets say i apply to >50 programs, but i only get 5 invites. Are the chances of matching slim to none?

Slimmer but not none.

None is when you have one interview and the PD hates you..

As mentioned above apply away man.. Look toward the midwest as well there are a ton of programs in Chicago and Michigan. I lived in Chicago for 5 years.. It is a sweet place.

As mentioned before it is better to spend a few extra bucks and match than to not apply to enough places and not match.

Ok, I now have up to 80 programs selected in ERAS. I still have another question though...whether I get 1 interview or I get 10, there is still no guarantee in matching, correct?
