i had a question and was wondering if anyone knew the answer or where i might be able to find the answer. i you were off schedule can you participate in the allopathic and/or osteopathic matches. if not what do students in those circumstances usually do. the profession of interest would be psychiatry if that helps too. thanks everyone very much.

I can only speak to the allo match.

It depends on what you mean by "off cycle".

In order to participate in the NRMP match upcoming (i.e. March 2009) you need to graduate by June 30 2009.

If you graduate after this, then you are free to try and find a spot outside the match. You could even apply to programs this fall, and ask them to give you a spot outside the match. You are welcome to find a spot as long as you begin training by Feb 1, 2010. If you can't start by Feb 1, 2010, then you must enter the 2010 match instead, to start training July 1, 2010.

thank you. by off cycle i mean if someone graduated by late august. are very many programs approachable in terms of giving non-match associated residencies, and the other question is what if you were trying to couples match. the person that is participating in the match, do they still give the name of the person who is unable to participate in the match. how does that work?

If you are graduating by late august, you will not be able to participate in the next match. You can try to get someone to give you a spot outside of the match. Whether or not that will happen will depend on the competitiveness of your chosen field, how competitive you are, and why you are off cycle. Psych is relatively non compettitve, so there is a good chance this will happen.

You cannot "couples match" this year, as you will be ineligible to register for the match. If a program is very interested in you and your partner, they could sign you outside the match, and then rank your partner highly enough to match. You will need to trust them on this, as they cannot sign your partner outside the match.

This all assumes that you are a US grad. If you (and your partner) are an IMG, then both can be signed outside the match at any time (except from ROL submission deadline until match day if you submit a rank list).

Since it appears that the OP is at an osteopathic school, he/she is eligible to sign outside of the NRMP match (not sure about the osteo rules, either).

Assuming his/her partner was also an osteopathic student and Independent candidate, he/she COULD sign outside of the NRMP/allopathic match if they wished or a program that was willing to sign them both was found.

Otherwise what aPD said.
