Matched into Anesthesia last May but hate my separate Prelim program

Hi all,
I'm facing a real problem right now and I'm asking for anyone's help. I'm really having trouble in my prelim program and having problems coping with the workload and the hospital in general. I have had some thoughts of quitting and to just find another job outside medicine.


Is there any way to change prelim programs without going against the match and keep my advanced anesthesia position? should I bring this up to the program director of my anesthesia program if he might have openings in their prelim program. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

God, how I hated my internship year...Took a gung ho internship. I was miserable. Starting counting the days starting in September or so. You are almost 1/3 of the way through...

Remember, they can always hurt you more, but they can't stop the clock.

Truck through it. Set a goal....get through each day or each week whatever you want, but no matter where you are intern year sucks. You made it this far you get can get through a year full of BS. Remember, it's just a few months don't think of it as a year. Think of it as a means to an end. That's how I got through.

Try to pretend to like it.
Try to forget about life outside work for the rest of the year. Go to bed early. I tried to enjoy life as an intern, but it only made matters worse as I got more and more tired.

Yup. Had many weeks in residency that had more hours than internship, but liking the work made all the difference.

don't think of it in terms of a whole year. You just have to get through today. Tomorrow is a new day. Once a week you get a whole day off. Intern years suck, but you are much more protected now than even a few years ago. Just get through today. Then next thing you know you'll have a day off. You can do it.

As you can see, you're in good company. Many, if not most of us, had grueling intern years. Hell, some of us had miserable malignant residencies as well. Stick it through and get to your reward. Unless you seriously have a better opportunity doing something else, don't make life-changing decisions while under depression and/or duress.

I did my intership in 2002. It was a relatively nice place, but still hell. 2002 was the last year before the 80 hour work week, we definitely did 100+ some months. It was tough, but only one year.

Dude. Slog it out. You'll be fine and maybe you'll learn something while you're at it. CA1 year is awesome especially after pulling 60 hours worked from Friday morning til Monday morning. Then you can laugh as your fellow CA1's cry about going home "late" at 4pm. Haha dont sweat it man, it'll make you tougher and a better anesthesia resident. my 2 cents

Most have endured difficult work loads during intern year. It never crossed my mind (or anyone I know) to quit and get a job outside of medicine. If this was more than a passing thought, perhaps you should listen to the voice in your head. It may be that medicine is not what you thought it would be. If you are just tired and frustrated and NOT really considering quitting, then disregard my suggestion.

Or pediatrics for that matter. Intern year was awful! I went home crying so many days because the people just weren't pleasant to put it nicely. Any time I feel like I'm working a lot, I log my work hours and I find that I'm generally well within 80h/wk which I rarely was on peds.
