Let's say one of your rec writers congratulates you and then asks you to tell them where you matched on Thursday.

Does that mean you didn't match at the rec writer's program? The rec writer is on the match committee.

I don't think the programs find out who they're getting until Wednesday, so perhaps the hypothetical letter writer was just saying they'd like to find out where you ended up if it turns out not to be your home program...
