Hi,
I just wanted to get some thoughts on how likely it would be that twin girls would match into the same ortho residency program. The best case scenario for us would be to end up in the same program so that we could live near each other. Has anybody ever seen this happen?

I've heard of twin brothers matching into the same EM program.... caused them plenty of trouble because people kept confusing them, as they were both 'Dr. Lastname'. Problem was solved by putting them in different hospitals. It's something you might want to try to avoid; if you want to be in the same area, try going for different programs, unless you both are desperate for the same thing. Being different specialties means you can collaborate and offer a multispecialty practice, which could mean more money.

You may be thinking a little too far in advance here. Are both of you accepted to the same medical school yet?

Not yet, but we are both really competitive applicants and the med schools in GA really favor in state applicants. I know its a bit far in the future but the past few years have flown by, and i'm sure the next few will too. I just wanted to see how likely everybody thought it would be. We're both interested in the same things and will almost definitely end up in the same specialty.

I think you are both getting way ahead of yourselves. More than 60% of physicians decide in medical school that they prefer another medical specialty instead of what they thought they liked during their pre-med years.

most small surgical residencies will not take couples, and by extension, probably would not take twins

best bet would be to match into a big city that has a lot of programs i.e. NYC, so you can be in different programs but in same city. if you are in the same program you will never get to take vacation together, but if you are in different programs you could try to coordinate schedules

I graduated from Mercer and I'm now doing ortho in Ohio. There were two twin brothers who graduated a year ahead of me (pm me if you want their names). They were great guys - really smart, hard working, etc. One ended up doing ENT in Virginia and the other matched ortho in Atlanta (though he switched to radiology after his intern year).

They did everything together (started at same Jr. college, transferred to Mercer to play baseball, applied to med school together, studied together, etc). At the end of the day, they found in med school that their ultimate career goals differed and they applied for different specialties.

Always keep in mind that this can happen and you should probably not make a career decision for your own life based on your twin.
