After going through the majority of my third year, I have decided that EM is the field for me. I know that EM is becoming more and more competitive each year, but is there something I should focus on to make my application stand out? I would rather not do research and I hope that does not hurt me in the long run.

Step one score?

1) If your school has an EM program, you need to honor it and get a good SLOE.
2) Then you need to set up some good aways and get good SLOEs there.
3) Ace step 2.
4) Don’t be weird or annoying.

Do you have any examples of "weird" students? I asked because the definition of "weird" is subjective.

The emergency department is a team. You have doctors, nurses, techs, EMS, etc who all work together. As a student you are an outsider to the team so you need to try to blend in as best as possible without stepping on toes. The absolute worst thing you can do as a student in the emergency department is to give an ED nurse attitude or talk down to them. I’ve seen it before and it ain’t pretty. Don’t do it.

But I feel like that’s not really being “weird” that’s just being rude.

When I think of “weird” I think of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter

Don’t be like that either.

Na, you’d be surprised at how socially inept some ms3s can be. I sure was. They aren’t trying to be rude but their “different” persona can really piss off ED nurses. Dunno how else to describe it.

I was very socially inept when I shadowed an ENT doc two months ago. But that's because she was definitely in the top ten most attractive women I've met in my life. Why I get so socially awkward around pretty women......... i'll never know.

I feel like it’s the “PC” thing to say that there’s doctors of every personality type in every field, and one shouldn’t let one issue keep them back from their passion, but IMO fields like EM, FM, and Peds require a LOT of people skills to be good at. Also if you get socially awkward around some ED nurses they’ll give you **** since they’ll think you’re on the spectrum.

I got that. But ED female nurses can appear bossy when they are working with residents who is not part of the ED crew... They are used to suggesting to the ED physicians what to do and these docs would do it because they already established a level of trust with them. They have to understand when they are working with IM residents rotating in the ED they just can't come and start spewing orders for these residents to write and expect them to do the same. You are probably a great nurse, but I don't know you so don't expect me to follow blindly your nonsense without examining these patients.

Yeah very few IM residents mesh into the ED well for this very reason. You don’t like ED nurses for the exact opposite reason of why I don’t like floor nurses. I like my nurses to be vocal and proactive. I don’t want to have to micromanage every single order. If an ED nurse is being bossy it’s because the doctor is being lazy or slow about 99% of the time and the nurse just wants things to get moving.

Where did I say I don't like ED nurses? What I am saying is that they have to understand that docs that are rotating in the ED don't spend enough time there to establish a level of trust with them, hence don't expect them to blindly write orders. It's just the nature of the business we are in.

I think you have a better chance of Press Ganey going away than that happening.

As long as the residents don’t throw a ****-fit when the nurses analyze every intervention they order to make sure it won’t kill the patient, and don’t enact anything until they are comfortable knowing that what the resident has ordered is the correct thing.

Yaknow, because there hasn’t been enough trust established.

During my rotations I noticed a pretty clear heirarchy on the floor of attending, resident, nurses, then students. In the ED, it’s not as clear-cut, and many times the nurses would challenge some of the orders, especially the interns. I feel like if you’re not okay with that dynamic, EM may not be for you. Of course, maybe the nurses when I rotated were just especially bossy.

DId youtell her,,, " youre attractiveness is getting in the way of my education" and filed a lawsuit.
And if she was the top ten most attractive woman you met in your life, you are severely sheltered.

Must be exhausting explaining to a nurse every F***ing thing in the world. That and tryingto input into epic has to suck big time

Probably does! There’s lots of aspects of healthcare that suck.

doubt it. Even she did I can think of 10 other girls off the top of my head that are more attractive than jessica alba
You can not be serious! There is no creature on this planet earth that is more attractive than Jessica Alba. She is the most beautiful creature that God ever created.
